Why would you say you can't borrow electricity? Several EVs now have the ability to share charge.

Its not just cities Where EV's work well. They work in everyplace except truly rural areas where you need to drive long distances.

My place in NH is very very rural. I'm talking 1000 ft driveway and a dirt road. But I'm still only 18 miles from a WalMart and grocery shopping.

I agree with you in the edge case of places where getting anything requires a 100+ mile trip. But that represents probably 1% of the auto market.

Extreme rural EVs dont' play. But again, when charging speed comes down and charger availability comes up they will be as good or better than gas cars. Better because you can top off the "tank" every evening at home if you wish.

We are talking jeeps, so if we're advocating for a mall crawling society rather than one of an explorer, then it makes sense... otherwise, all EV will do is destroy the explorer inside us and relegate us to the distance outside the dome we are permitted to go

For the record, I do not believe crude oil is limitless, just I do not subscribe to the narrative that we are anywhere near close to "peak" oil and that it is more of a political limitation at least in the Western based countries than a actual physical limitation to find and extract.

Crude oil pricing on the commodity market is a racket more than a actual refection of true costs plus reasonable profit percentage.

I didn't know anything about it until about 10 yrs ago. We were having a discussion at the power plant on fossil fuels and crude oil. Someone brought up the abiogenesis oil vs peak oil thing. What gets me. When NASA is looking for life. One of the things they look for is hydrocarbons. Are they looking for crude? LOL

You guys are slipping, nobody mentioned the recent F150 Lightning test where they only got 90 miles (!) range towing a trailer in a comparison test. The range dropped so quickly they had to abort their test, turn around, and stop midway back to recharge.

This is all good EV conversation but one other thing needs to be considered, particularly related to infrastructure. Right now, despite our government doing everything possible to kill ICE and incentivize EVs, most people aren’t buying pure EV vehicles. So long as they are a niche market, your average gas station owner is never going to tear out his pumps to replace them with charging stations. Maybe a token few chargers on the edge of his lot because he can get “free” government money, but no more. All it will take is a regime change in 2024 to make all of this go away and we are back to $2.00 gas and nobody caring about EVs outside of big cities and people who want to virtue signal. Why do you think all of these lofty goals for EV adoption are a decade out? Nobody wants to overplay their hand.

As for the big performance numbers, while I enjoy fast cars I could care less. I want an experience, not a laptop that will silently shove me back into my seat a few times. I’ll take an old slow 911 all day long over a new Taycan.

I agree. Low end Torque is king for wheeling and straight sixes excel in that area.

Every time I drive the TJ I revel in the instant torque even if it takes forever to get to 65 with 33s, 3.73 gears and a 3spd auto. ?

That being said the small turbo on the 2.0T is pretty close in feeling.

Electric motors make 100% torque instantly. It’s why I think the 4XE makes a lot of sense for a Jeep. A well designed hybrid system can do a great job at filling in the holes in an ICE powerband, and no range anxiety or charging station BS!

It depends as with every motor. I’ve built 5.0ls that loved high end hp. I’ve built stroke i6 that had a torque line that put its best torque out below 2100 rpm.

Having driven multiples of both nothing will ever replace the snap of a Jeep i6 for my wheeling preferences.

To tag on to this about charging EV's. What if you live in an apartment? Will the landlord be willing to install a charging station? If they do. How long before they get vandalized

I can see this happening. You're plugged in for the night. Some asshole comes along after dark. And starts to unplug everyone. Go to work the next morning, only t find out that you got about a half charge. Well it happened to me with a block heater on a diesel one winter. While I was doing a on-site work in Minn. in Feb. Staying at a motor lodge with posts with outlets on them for plugging in your block heater on your diesel. Some asshole came along and unplugged everyone. There was a BUNCH of pissed out people come morning.
