The USA did indeed win the International Math Olympiad (IMO) in 2015, the first time that we won since 1994 (21 years). China did dominate that period, but actually SIX countries other than China won or tied for first during those 15 years. The US team also won in 2016, 2018, and tied for first in 2019.

These are six high school kids competing as individuals - there are no official “teams” recognized In the competition. People simply aggregate the individual scores by the home country of the competitors for - well, fun I guess. Wikipedia explains it well. The competition is not so much about knowing the math, but figuring out what math to apply to solve a specific problem - it’s more of a reasoning exercise.

Anyway, the REAL USA “team“ that won the title in 2015 included Ryan Alweiss, Allen Liu, Yang Liu, Shyam Narayanan, and David Stoner, all of whom were awarded gold medals, and Michael Kural, who earned a silver medal, just one point away from the gold. Photo below.

"MAY NOT BE ACTUAL PHOTO"
My wife follows Merchants of Speed on FB; they are always posting mislabeled pictures. It is hilarious! So many people get upset and try to correct them.
