A deer jumped out of the ditch on a two lane highway. I was going about 90 Km/h (about 55 mph) and this is the resulting damage. I think the bumper with the bull bar kept the deer out of my front seat. Also kept the damage to other body parts to a minimum. She did get in a parting shot, left a hoof print on the fender just behind the fender flare. Reflecting on this, it could have been really bad.

don't take this personal, but that bumper being a off road bumper just barely held up. Was it a pretty cheap and thin metal bumper?

a bumper made out of 3/16" plate metal and welded on bull bars would have taken that hit a lot better.

How thick is that metal? I went through a buck at around 45mph in my TJ with a smittybilt XRC bumper. No damage at all, only a little hair in the which cable.

I destroyed a bumper, grill, head light, and ripped the entire fender off last time I hit a deer. Going roughing 65ish at the time (105km/h or so). Bumper did it's job. Could have been a lot worse, had to wait couple months to get it completely repaired when that happened.

Some people seem to have not seen a deer go through an engine block before? Ok most.. LOL. it's a 200ish lb animal on skinny legs with most of it's body weight center mass. Kind of like hitting a floating 200lb block of something. They can do a lot of damage. Even if had an unnecessary thick steel bumper, that doesn't look that thin to me anyways, it'd have rolled over the hood or into the fender as a result. Doing more damage then what that bumper absorbed. It did its job.

People always think more mass will somehow defy the laws of physics lol.

Just fill a tube with cement, like uncle Rodney did on his CJ8, hit everything in that sumbitch son I'll tell you whut.

The que that shows that as a thin bumper is you can see the imprint of the bumper mounting plates just above the left tow hook. Those mounting end flanges aren't that thick, maybe 1/8" . To have them not bend and to have what appears to be sheet metal form around them, that is a thin bumper giving a false sense of security. People buy these cheap bumpers thinking they go a deal and it's going really protect you from deer and such, when in fact it will buckle and do nothing. I won't even go into thinking that thing was strong enough to actually do any winching.

3/16" steel plate bumpers are not going to imprint around bumper horns on impact. Either they don't move or the the frame gets tweaked on a bad impact.

What gets me is people buy cheap cosmetic bumpers thinking these things are actually worth a damn and will protect them, then start doing things with them that they were never designed for.

You think a bolt on stinger is going to hold up to a forward roll and roll you to the side?

Glad nobody was injured (cept the deer of course.) I used to argue with my wife about bumpers/brush guards and she never thought they were necessary , but I put a poison spyder bumper/pre-runner on her JK and last year she hit 3 deer .....mangled her license plate but the bumper was barely dimpled. Now she's a firm believer in bumpers. Looks like just the flare took a hit otherwise?

Didn't dispute any of that... that's on the user for using it improperly if they don't know that. But what that got to do with him hitting a deer going highway speeds? I doubt he was offroading where he needed a thick walled rock crawler bumper at the time.

I disagree, if you are buying a bumper to protect yourself from deer, then you should get a thick walled offroad bumper so it will not crumple like tinfoil.

Look at Riverdogs post above to support my statement.

Meh sure. Doesn't prevent it from rolling and ripping the fender off though ;). Unless you're going full cow catcher.

I think it all depends on what you consider doing its job. For me, its protecting the passengers and being able to drive away and not be stranded. This bumper did keep the deer out of the engine compartment and out of the passenger compartment. That's the most important thing. Sure, there are bumpers that might not have bent as much but very few would have been unscathed and you would probably still want to replace them rather than count on them absorbing a 2nd major impact. So all in all I think Egorr did ok.
Just my 2 cents

This guy showed up in the parking lot where I work Monday morning. All 4 legs were broken. Called the game warden. He finished him off. Said he images that the deer is over 200 lbs. He was a nice 8 point.
