So I was surprised to see this in-depth discussion on the hinge that Alu-Cab uses. In the times I’ve used this cap in the African bush it has just worked and to tell you the truth I never thought about it. I do know that the Alu-Cab canopy outlasts the 79 Series truck that they put them on as I had a brand new 79 on our last trip but noticed that the cap wasn’t new. I asked the rental guy and he said they usually get 2 to 3 trucks used before they have to replace the cap..(That’s about 250,000 to 300,000 km of use, 90% of which is Offroad)

I just Googled “Centre Flex Waterproof Hinge” and all sorts of hits came up testifying to the hinge’s strength and durability.
This video states that the manufacturer tests their hinges through 20,000 cycles (and it should go beyond that. So long story short I’m not too worried and very happy with the performance...

Doesn’t seem strange to me to talk about products here. I appreciate your cooler post but coolers don’t live outside in the snow, rain, salt, etc. real metal hinges seem far better to me. Kind of surprised they don’t use a real hinge given the price.

I agree about talking about products here. We can all learn from each other.

I don’t think I’ve posted anything about coolers though. I think Alu-Cab thinking is that these hinges are actually better than metal hinges...metal pieces grinding against each other will invariably cause wear. Add sand or dust to that process and you’ll make it worse.

is that the brand of hinge Alu-Cab uses?

I dunno if that's adequate for all the plywood and cases of Coors Latte i'm going to be putting in and out of Glady's. Maybe 30,000 cycles, but not 20k.:turkey:

I think @smlobx meant he was surprised that hinges were the discussion point, not that products were discussed.

I enjoy the debating when its sensicle (is that a word? probably meant sensible). I never would have learned about Centre Flex Waterproof Hinges without it.

I was trying to figure out how many years that might be for “Average use” but there are too many variables. Most of my estimates were between 10 and 30 years...

Yeah, you could open/close it 3 times a day per door for 20 years. Then if they fail, just replace them.

Also I can go weeks without opening the tonneau. But on a trip I'd likely open them a bunch more per day. I'd need to channel my regression/derivative calculus days to figure it out. I've drank those brain cells away long ago.

On a lighter note the Canopy is doing well. I live in south Florida so it rains here often and no leaks so far. I added the low profile cross bars and they seem to be perfect for my use. I have had several private messages asking for measurements and so added pictures which I have tried to reply to as quick as possible. All and all I am happy so far. Our month long trip is coming up June first and will hopefully be able to provide a much more in depth review of it since we will live out of it. Thanks again guys for the healthy discussions and keep it up

You've been MOST helpful! Got me the info/pics I needed to put down my deposit on my own Alu-Cab.

Have you had any heavy rains with the canopy door open? Do the plastic hinges do their job and no water gets into the truck bed?

Thanks again Lifesaver!

@LifesaverJT, who installed your canopy? Did it come with "d-rubber that you had to secure to the bed rails, or was this rubber on the canopy rails, and that sits on the bed rails?

I asked the dealer for the install directions, he said they don't have them for the JT, but do for the Tacoma, and its virtually the same......at 6 pages, it was not complete in my opinion, but i checked their site......that's the manual they give. They mention items needed, "turpentine, cloth, black sealant, silicone or sikaflex, window cleaner" But then don't mention them again. So I don't know if you're supposed to glue this thing down with the sealant, or if the sealant glues the D-rubber down..... D-Rubber is also not listed under tools nor items needed........Wish I bought an RSI.....JUST KIDDING!!! :CWL:

I’m curious about your comment about the low profile bars working out for you. I saw your picture and was wondering what you do with them and how are you attaching things to the bars.
I may need some sort of riser in order to attach my RTT.

It comes with the rubber on the canopy already. My wife and I literally took it out on the crate sat it in the rails I slid in the mounts and spaced 3 out per side and then bolted them down. I did add a small amount of black RTV in the front corners Where I saw two small spots on light on each side then hose tested it and it was dry as a bone. Took us about an hour to line it up and install it. I had an Alu-Cab canopy for the new Tacoma’s and the Gladiator is way easier

I use them to attach my Ground tent to while travel. I use a leftover rhino rack tie downs

  • It comes with seal on bottom of canopy and my wife and I took it out of the crate sat it up there and lined it up. I put three mounts per side tightened them down and added two small spots of Black RTV on each front corner where I thought i saw a small speck of light. It was way easier than a Tacoma I had one of those too
