I can't help but wonder what would be your first clue something was wrong if you were towing that Jeep. It seems a bit extreme, to not know something was wrong, but then again there are a lot of clueless people out there. Cheers!
Yea I agree more details on why the owner even put it in gear and 4Lo would be nice. Like was that bad advice, or was it stuck and the RV somehow got it out and just kept going?

The owners manual says to put the transmission in 1st gear, and the transfer case in neutral.
He just pulled the transfer case shifter a bit too far.

Even if he got the Jeep into 8th gear at 0.67, in 4 low the Rubicon 4.1 through the 4x transfer case becomes a 16.40 rear drive. 0.67 8th gear on a 16.4 with 31" tires at 70mph is spinning 8,337rpm.

If it was in 1st... 58,606!

Ah fair enough, costly mistake, but a cautionary tale. Hopefully the owner was able to at least get some help from insurance, but I could easily see them being unwilling.

i dont believe $30k in parts damaged. 3.6 crate engine is like $4k. where is the other $26k?
Best guess is the $26K is where all the pieces of that $4K crate engine exploded into.

Engine is $4k
Transmission is $2750
Transfer case is $2500

There's nothing else of significance that far back. A few drive shafts? Meh. Even a crate axle is like $2500 and sway bar is $1500 or so.

No doubt you have a 35' gasser and not a Diesel pusher 8-) And again, it would happen in seconds.. While your Wife was yapping in your ear, etc...
Hmmm... seems like there's some drag.... oh it's gone no worries on we go! Btw did you hear something? Must've been that bean I had for dinner.

I question if it ever made it's way up to speed. My old CJ was being towed and a similar thing happened, likely hit a bump and was jarred into gear. An almighty bang followed by an awful dragging ensued. The hub had detonated.

But we are also missing more than a few details.

I'm betting they had to replace the whole drive train. Engine, transmission, axles (or at least the internals). But still $30K sounds a little high.
