Howdy All,

Sorry if this is one of those things that has been beaten to death but my internet skills are Legendary only because of how BAD they are.

I know the winch is NOT bolted to the actual bumper but in the case of the Gladiator it is bolted to a winch plate which is bolted to the frame of the truck. That being the case, to save some money and to keep the weight down is it possible to buy a winch plate, bolt it on to the frame and then modify the stock plastic bumper to work?

Is this a dumb way to go, as I have said in all of my posts so far I do NOT plan to abuse this Jeep but I have had a winch on all of my previous Jeeps and feel kinda naked without one. With my intended use I will probably not ever need one, that said NOT having one if alone could cost way MORE then the cost of the winch setup if I need to be recovered.

So I ask the members to offer opinions and advice. Thanks.

I am thinking the same way, thought there was no room but am looking into it, might have to use spacers. I like the bumper, and can cut a hole through it to mount the hauser, with metal spacers behind it. I want to get a small sized 8-9000 lb. winch with removable control box so other then clutch handle it is hidden, I have seen that the clutch end can be move to have clutch at back so it might not stick up above bumper. I saw a post of one in a plastic bumper but not sure where....Jack

PS, Wife and I talked about, having to drop fifteen 80-100' oaks, Ash and Hickory dead trees on my property and instead of a tractor log winch, I'm thinking winch on front of Mojave might be cheaper and more useful in long run, wife is sorta on board....Jack

Howdy Bryan,

I love this forum, I feel like an idiot sometimes asking the questions I have but the forum members always come through. I have just installed the Patriot rock sliders from Rock Hard and think they are great.

Hey hey! Questions are questions… and it keeps us on our toes… plus you might catch something that you didn’t know what’s out and go Dammz…. I need that… glad you like your rock sliders and yes I agree … love this forum.

I like the theory behind that plate, but I would like to keep the stock Mojave bumper and find a plate that drops the winch back behind. Only the hump rising above the bumper.
Anybody?

So... Lemme play devils advocate for a hot minute. Have you ever used the winch? Why dump a $1,000+ into something you will never use + extra weight?
  • AAA cost $100/year if you never leave cell coverage.
  • Do you venture into unpopulated country where someone will not pass for an hour or two?
  • Could a Garmin or Zoleo serve the same purpose?
I wheeled for 15 years never having a winch. Moved up into the PNW and pulled winch on my 1st snow run. That being said, I was aiming to use it and purposely trying to get stuck. Every time I have needed a winch was my fault. I won't have a Jeep up here without one, as I do use it at least twice a year.

Howdy Jim,

Being an old retired fart, if I want to do anything I usually have to do it alone or with some other old gimped up guy. I am long past the days when I would purposely go out to see how far I could go before submitting to the "cable". That said 60 years of off roading on dirt bikes, Jeeps and for the last few years hot rod SxS's has taught me that it's a whole lot better to be prepared then it is to depend on someone else to come to your rescue.

AAA isn't going to come to your help on forest service roads or two track trails that may need a 4 or 6 wheel drive wrecker just to get to you, cell phone service even at my home is undependable let alone a few miles from my home up and into the mountains, how many friends could or would drop whatever it is their doing to drive for many miles to drag my butt out? I look at a winch as an insurance policy, you pray you will never need it but if $hit happens and you need it but don't have it, your going to pay for it and the chances that it will cost more then the policy in this case a winch is almost guaranteed.
