I just got my gladiator two weeks ago, everything was working great and I love it, but now I can't open the tailgate, it almost seems like I triggered some kind of lock on it where when I hit the unlock on my key fob it still doesn't unlock. I tried manually unlocking with the key and that still didn't work..anyone know anything that I don't?

Have you seen if the latch feels different from when it use to open? Maybe someone broke and the latch is just flipping with nothing attached to open?

Yes that's what it feels like, nothing clicks anymore when I pull it. I was hoping it was some type of added security thing that I didn't know about

Kinda sounds like the rod on the latch is broke or slipped off. They are usually plastic. There should be an access panel you can take off and look at it. I would turn it in to warranty though.

I would never touch it, brand new and under warranty. Let the dealership fit it.

Please keep us posted? I had a thing on my Liberty related to autolock ... One of the reasons one of my possible builds is a sport S, to avoid replacing pcm, wiring bundles to fix a mechanical door lock. If they need to replace an actuator, or a rod, or if this effects your door locks please let us know? Note to naysayers, I know the mechanical door locking mechanism isn't related to the PCM, except it is... Would really like to know about it on JT!

Sounds like someone tried their damndest to get it open while it was locked and broke something. Let the dealership fix it under warranty instead of you messing with it. Good luck and keep us posted.

Ironically, I had a Liberty with a tailgate problem too...... I replaced the actuator to fix mine.

Take it to the dealer.

JK/JKU: there is an allen head screw that connects the exterior handle to the latch on the JK's. It fell out into the bottom of the tailgate on my JKU, 30 second search on the internet got me the answer. Dealer had to order an entire latch for a small screw.

Good luck!

Took it into the dealer, turns out when I had the bed liner installed, they knocked that little screw off that Moriarity was talking about off the latch, they found the screw somehow in the tailgate, got it fixed in about two minutes. Thank you all for your help! I am new to this forum, wish I knew about it when I had my wrangler. you guys rock!

Anyone know how to disarm the power lock for the tailgate? I would like the tailgate to only lock and unlock with my key.

My issue is with the top and windows down, the only reason to lock the doors is to lock the tailgate. If I have a locking tonneau cover, it's worthless if someone reaches in and unlocks my doors, as it also unlocks my tailgate, and now it doesn't matter if the tonneau was locked. Any thoughts or magic settings I am unaware of ... wires to cut, buttons to push?

Hey @DenverGladiator I would love to find out what ends up being the solution to this problem. I originally liked the Honda Ridgeline truck. Was considering it a long time ago. I would have put a hard tonneau on the truck so that I could then leave things locked up in the bed of the truck, which really would have been my trunk. Asked the sales lady about a lock for the tailgate. She then told me that the area where the spare is, under the bed floor has a small trunk area there that locks with a key. And I then had to explain it to her that any thief could just open up the tailgate and help themselves to whatever is under the tonneau as the tailgate has no lock on it at all. Just Forest Gump stupid if you ask me.

Hopefully Jeep has a simple solution to this as I bet that a huge majority of Gladiator owners will have hard tonneau covers and will run with doors off in the summer time. Will be more than interesting to follow this thread. Thanks for bringing up the issue.

I plan to keep my soft top in the bed when it's off, golf clubs a good part of the year, and gear for off-roading year round. I will definitely have a locking hard tonneau, but I refuse to store anything valuable back there till I can disable the power lock. I know there is a panel on the inside of the tailgate; if I have time tonight, I might fiddle around back there. I need the brake light and back-up camera, so not as simple as just unplugging the harness.
