I think it's funny that he claims to have been "writing workshop manuals for 28 years" but his grammar was so bad that TFL had to polish it up just so they could print it and it still has errors. Lol.

Anyhow, take the engine being described in that article, and keep the things that are trash about it, but now add a new dual EGR system and new coated cylinder walls and new lightweighted pistons. Imagine in your mind how dreadful this new EcoDiesel is going to be.

Now, to add salt to the wound, you have to PAY MORE to get all these issues! That's moronic.

Dual EGR system!! Wow lets double what goes wrong. Lighter pistons? Sounds like they are taking a page from GM when they converted a gas engine to diesel for their passenger cars over 30 yrs. ago, they also coated their cylinders with the thought it would work in conjunction with the lighter pistons well that proved to be a mass failure.

Diesel engines are heavy and i know that FCA is trying to get the weight down so it even makes sense putting a diesel in a Jeep but there are certain areas within a diesel motor that sacrifices in durability cannot be made.

I was really considering a diesel for my next new vehicle purchase but with all the modern tech being added (EGR coolers, DEF fluid and such) I finally decided to forgo that as an option and stick with gas. Any older diesel was worth it's weight in gold for reliability and durability but with all the tech being added for new environmental and other concerns it's just adding more complexity and quite frankly I don't want to go down that road.

Love my Diesel the performance is outstanding! I own two other modern diesels the increased maintenance including the DEF system is the trade-off, I am willing to endure. The performance I enjoy includes increased power, drivability and less shifting. To each his/her own opinion.

I also have two modern diesels including a Gladiator and so far I love both of them. The torque, mileage, and overall feel is awesome. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I traded
My GMC Canyon diesel for my gas JT. Never had a single issue other than the torque converter going out over 100k miles.

I want a diesel JT Rubi in the worse kind of way. Guess I’m glutton for punishment 😂

No one should take tfl seriously, they are knuckle heads and just say stuff for clicks and have no real world experience other then the stuff they stage for their make believe tests.

I traded my zr2 2.8 on my gladiator 3.0 just can't resist that diesel feel. I also had no problem with the 2.8, it was a bit low on hp. And they did have issues with rods.. not mine but I read enough threads that it was starting to concern me lol.

You know, I just wrapped the odometer on my JT EcoDiesel Rubicon around to 14k and I have literally nothing but good things to say so far. The ecodiesel is a good engine. It really is. My use is a healthy mix of city, highway, towing, heavy bed loads, offroading... and this motor is rock freekin' solid. I know the gas motor can do all the same things, but this engine is just happy to do whatever I need it to without revving to the moon or using excessive fuel. I get a consistent 20 mpg, and I've done as good as 26 mpg. When you read about the failures people experience with prior generations of this motor, its due to soot load leading to premature bearing failure or other age based failures current generation gas motors also suffer from such as chain guide wear - things that we can work with and would experience on the vast majority of modern drivetrains. For soot load, wait for GDE's tune and that should really help, and in the meantime, do your oil changes with the correct oils. Modern diesels are coming into their own, and nothing on this engine is actually what I'd consider to be 'revolutionary' - EGRs are getting good, bringing with them performance and economy, along with better emissions, DEF is annoying but its really not that big of a deal - just fill up at a commercial fuel station where DEF is less than the price of diesel, multi-speed transmissions are really here to stay, Variable Geometry Turbos erase lag and improve performance and economy across the whole spectrum and have become extremely reliable, Common Rail is well into its paces at this point with everyone standardizing on Bosch fuel systems.... so like I really don't understand the constant 'muh mechanical diesel!' when these modern diesels are actually quite good at what they do. Want an experimental engine? look no further than the Mazda Spark-Controlled Compression Ignition or some of these 'variable compression ratio' engines from Lexus. Jeep, and by proxy FCA or whatever their name is this week, are not doing experimental stuff here. They bought an engine from a diesel engine specialist firm (they happen to own VM Motori, so they got to call all the shots on this particular engine's design) and integrated it into the Gladiator - exactly like they do for their own gasoline engines and even the Cummins in their larger offerings.

Oh yes, TFL the masters of Flawless Truth. That's why Subaru doesn't give them test vehicles. Oh but they buy their own and bs those results too. Anyway, i am not going to get into the argument of TFL. I do watch them, i do like their videos, but I take everything they say with a grain of salt. They are biased just like everyone else.
