I have a 2020 Jeep Gladiator Sport S. In the mornings after I start it the engine seems to idle high and it takes a minute to lower. When I put the Gladiator into Reverse it seems loud when doing so. Not any sort of metal , but just kind of a thud . Has anyone else experienced this ?

All engines idle high for a little until the engine warms up some. I assume it's something to do with getting the oil flowing and the engine up to temp before you start going.

I've also driven multiple vehicles that clunck when going into reverse first thing. I've always assumed it was something to do with the gears not being lined up perfectly due to it being in park and moving a little. Edit: unless you are talking about something different than the truck moving against the brakes when you shift. It's been a while since I drive an automatic.

Differential noise would be normal, but if that is not what you are hearing I would check the bolts on all 4 control arms of the rear, I have found bolts missing that hold the control arm in place

Not sure if this helps but... i too have noticed it. In my opinion, it is the ā€œparking pawlā€ releasing from the park position and allowing movement of the vehicle. If u park on any incline at all or there is any movement in the vehicle after it is place into park, then one can assume it would bind slightly. Old school transmissions used a mechanically moved rod that would engage with a slot that would then ā€œlockā€ or ā€œparkā€ the transmission from moving. I am not savvy to the newer transmissions and how they go into the park mode and prevent movement of the vehicle. I can assume and guess that an electric solenoid has a play in that function especially for the ā€œauto parkā€ feature. Just m2c.

I have the same problem, but a louder thud. It is not all the time, sometimes hardly hear it at all. Another related problem is the downshifting of the transmission. During the downshift from third to second and second to first, there is a clunk that sounds like slack in the drivetrain. The dealer service dept. said "that's normal". I filed a case because it is not normal. Still waiting to see what they will do about it. Any thoughts on that problem?

Iā€™m experiencing the same thing, however, I only noticed it since my driveshaft was replaced due to the recall. Not only is there an audible ā€œthunkā€ when shifting into reverse, but I can see the hood of the Jeep tilt downward and to the left gently shaking the truck.

My Gladiator is at the dealer today and they said ā€œwe canā€™t replicate the issueā€. I told them to keep it and try it first thing tomorrow morning. It does it EVERY morning upon first start up and then about 50% of every reverse the rest of the day. The other 50% are dead smooth and no ā€œthunkā€.

High idle on start up is more for emissions. It gets the catalytic converters up to temp quicker.

If the engine is still at a high idle rpm this is totally normal, basically it's like neutral bombing it into reverse. It's also not uncommon when going from drive to reverse since all of the rubber mounts/bushings go from being loaded in one direction to the other. In the morning when it's cold, let it run for a minute and the idle comes down to normal before going from park to reverse and see if that helps. If you have a steep(ish) driveway, it could also be related to the parking pin disengaging under a heavy load.

When you park on an incline, pull the emergency brake before you actually put it in park, then put it in park and shut down. I read this somewhere and tried it. My clunk is gone when I do this.

Iā€™ve found that the ā€œclunkā€ when shifting into reverse is normal if parked on a slight incline. Iā€™m not worried about it at all anymore.

Anyone still having this issue or had it resolved? Have a 2020 (19K miles) just turned a year old throwing a CEL. Just put a 2in Mopar lift and 35in tires on her. She was heading into shop to get MPH reset and the CEL lit on the way in. You can only hear a thud it when we put her in reverse or drive but only after being in park for a while. Had a few Jeeps and I didnā€™t think anything of it. They always sound a little loud on the gear change after start up so hoping the CEL was something more simpleā€¦

She goes in tomorrow morning for a look at it (dealership is awesome) we are moving overseas and traveling to FL this weekend to drop off the Jeep for transport and then this happens.
