Sticky Steering Issue in cold weather.

It got down to single digits here in Colorado a couple of days ago, and I leave for work at 5am, I live in the mountains so my commute to the highway is very curvy. Long story short, I was turning from left to right and my steering felt like I ran out of power steering fluid for just a few seconds. I had to turn the wheel with significant force, then I almost oversteered off the road. I have my first service next week and this just made the top of my issue list. Any Thoughts?

This happened to early year model JL's when they first came out in 2018. The steering would just sort of freeze up or take tremendous force to turn. I think it was addressed with a software update or replacement of the steering box

Sounds like the ground issue... Have your dealer look this up for you...

My JL has the same issue when it got in the low 30’s in Houston.

All it took was a software update. There was a TSB for this.

I’m curious to see if my JT has the same issue if we ever have Fall!

Interesting. I ran into this over the weekend while in Moab. Morning temps were ~24F and I couldn't turn to the LEFT, but I could turn to the right. I assumed it was due to the cold weather, but this could end poorly..

I couldn’t find the email I sent to the dealer, but search the JL forums for the TSB.

I can’t remember if it was the left or right turn when the boost dropped out but was in a curve and only in cold temperatures. I sent the TSB to the dealer and they flashed the computer with the software update. This resolved the issue. I’m surprised to hear that this is happening as there has been two model years to update the ECU.

Thanks. I think we will be making a service appt with our local dealership. We'll want this reviewed as well as the back-up camera periodically not working. Here in Utah, we purchased from Larry H. Miller Dodge/Jeep in Sandy, Utah.

This happened to me this evening! Steering felt very heavy particularly on left turns and I had to put a lot of force to get it to turn left mid drive. Then it "broke free" and behaved Ike normal. Twice this happened today.

Just an update, I had my JT serviced and the dealer said they couldn’t find anything wrong, everything was up to date and to monitor the situation and let them know if it continues.

So far I haven’t had the extreme situation I had in the beginning, but I do notice some occasional resistance on cold mornings.

My JT stays in the garage and the JL lives outside.

after the last few cold snaps, the JL steering is sticky until the engine warms up. After that all is fine. No loss of boost since the flash update last year per the TSB.
