Have seen some discussions here about portable air compressors.

I plan on doing some off roading but not rock climbing or anything too extreme.

Will I need to air down for off roading if not doing extreme?

If so, do you recommend Viair portable compressors or another brand?

I have a Viair for my work trucks and have been pleased with it. Can't remember what model, though.

I have a portable ARB that I have used many times in my JK.. Plan to carry it over for the JT. Works great.

Airing down when offroad is helpful in most situations. It will smooth down washboard roads as well as any rocks you may encounter. You dont have to be doing any extreme rock crawling to take advantage of airing down. VIAIR and ARB both make some great portable packages. I would look at video comparisons on fill times for the tire size you have to help make your choice.

Also, on the other issue, airing down can help on rocks, but it also can help on stuff you can sink into, such as sand and mud, because it adds to the surface area in contact with the mushy stuff.

I doubt it. An inflator I suppose, but not a compressor.

Amazing to me how powerful these little guys are for what they cost. And they've gotten cheaper since I bought my Viair, apparently.

Another vote for Viair. I've had their 450P for over 7 years. Great little unit.

I like the Viair 440P. It is 3 CFM and the fastest one of the bunch. I have mine for many years. Some people like the full duty cycle of the 450P, but, it puts out less CFM. You will not hit the 440P 33% duty cycle filling tires anyway. I always thought that the 450P was just a de-tuned 440P to claim 100% duty cycle, and to me, the 440P is king.

I also have a Viair and have been very pleased with it. I think it is this one: https://www.viaircorp.com/portables/400p
You hook it up to your battery terminals for power.

It looks like you can get one for under $200: https://www.amazon.com/VIAIR-40043-400P-Portable-Compressor/dp/B000X9AXR8
I was guessing, and I was wrong. I just looked, and I actually have the Viair 450P. They're about $316 on Amazon.

It's worked well for about 7 years. Only thing I don't like about it is that the built-in pressure gauge is off. Not a big problem, but I have to use a separate pressure gauge to get the tires to the desired PSI.
