Looking for any fellow Jeepers that may have a grand cherokee in addition to their wrangler or JT and have experienced this issue. My dad is having a strange problem with his 2016 Grand Cherokee overland.

2:30pm -shifter would not shift out of park – foot on brake, parking brake off, brake lights were coning on. Shut off the engine and restarted it to see if that would clear the issue. Same thing. On the drivers dash a read out of: ‘service air system’ was showing and the check engine light was on solid. Shut off the engine exited the jeep and tried the other key fob – same issue with the same info on the dash.

waited a bit
3:10pm -again – started the engine with the same results and same message. Shut off the engine and disconnected both batteries and let the vehicle sit for 20 minutes. Checked the battery voltage with a fluke VOM – big battery was 11.68V, small battery was 11.5V - reconnected the batteries and re-started the engine – checked the alternator and it had 14.6v – still would not shift out of park and now the dash had a message to ‘shift into neutral to go to 4-wheel low’ with the check engine light still on solid. Shut off the engine and did 2 more starts. Now the dash message indicates ‘shifter needs service’.

4:00 pm – finally located the manual release for the shifter by the hinges in the center console. As soon as I tripped the lever the dash errors cleared up and after the engine ran for a few minutes the check engine light went off. Vehicle drove fine on 2/12/2016 for approximately 12 miles – no issues and the shifter worked normally

took it to the dealer, they could not replicate the issue so sent it home. Asked dealer about a shifter wiring harness recall for the 16 grand cherokee, but they said his is not included in the recall.

wouldn’t shift out of park again, had to use the mechanical release. Error message was to service the sir system. Check engine light was on approximately 45-55 minutes then went off after the second engine start

anyone have any thoughts or have any experience with this and know what might be causing it? Dealer seems to be lost on this.
