I fool around with some old big diesel tractors and one of the most important things you do after an upper rebuild ( the cylinders) is take that puppy out and put it to hard work. The heavy load is what seats the rings to cylinder walls (wears them in nice and tight) . if not the cyl. walls will form a varnish or lacquer like film which results in blow by and excessive oil consumption. If you don't do it right away it will be too late and the only fix is to rehone the cyl's to remove the varnish and start again.
Not sure if this is the same in gas engines but my gut thought is they need to be pushed hard a bit after 50 or so miles.
