I started to look around Guam for my next modification today. I ran to my local car audio store and I was almost ready to buy a big system. I took a breath and asked myself what I really wanted from my Jeep. I need some good bass with the top off but I dont need to beat down the block. I just wanted some good bass to fill the stock stereo on the cheap. It needed to be steath and I needed 300 watts RMS to make me happy based on previous sound systems. I have had systems poted, big, and powerful. I have been there before and I know a good ported sub at 300 rms will give me more than enough to crank it up.

So I chose the 100 dollar Skar RP-350.1D and a 2 small subs. More on the subs later. This is a work in progress. Today I installed the amp. More to come.

Disconnect footwell light and wire loom screw next to it. Keep the hardware, you will reuse the screw mount for the light.

Pull back the front passenger wheel well liner to install the power wire. You will need to cut the large rubber grommet in the footwell. Feed a wire grabber tool through the hole and attach the wire. Pull it through.

49685415523_6c42b09b36_b.jpg

Install all the connections to the amp. Do this first or you wont be able to reach the wires behind the amp once its installed under the dash.

I used my dewalt to hold the amp in place while I lined up the screws. I used plastic spacers I had laying around to space the amp off the motor. Also you will need a longer screw here. I used some hardware I had laying around. Just a longer plastic self taping screw.

Jeep gave us lots of grounds to the chassis. Use the third one down to install the ground wire.

49685420378_0ba6b636f8_b.jpg

In the back of the amp. Reinstall the screw that held the light in using this for the rear amp screw.

You will need to remove the screw holding the fan motor in on the front and align the amp with the hole there. This will only work with the SKAR RP-350.1D Watt amp. The holes lined up perfectly.

Run the wire to the back to power a 3 or 400 watt subwoofer.

49686259052_e825f93433_b.jpg

Remount the light to the screw hold that was holding the wiring. Reinstall panels.

I tested all the wires with my multi meter. There is NOT a remote switch back here but there is power (12v) constant. The other wires were 3 volts which means they are CAN BUS, dont mess with 3 volt wires, they run to the vehicle Network system.

I soldered the wires to the LOC (line out converter). I just removed about an 1/8 inch of insulation and soldered the LOC onto the two twisted pair.

I secured the Line out converter with velcro I had on hand, Slid it into place before I put the wires in the tray.

Wiring Harness put back in place. Its important to make sure everything in here is tight and out of the way of the seat belt moving around.

I finished wiring and split looming everything under the hood and in the chassis. There are plenty of options for powering the stereo int these trucks.

So we are pretty limited in space. I tossed out my gun box from the cargo management group and put this in its place. It bolts to the floor and is solid. I am going to paint the carpet black in the near future. The two subs I chose are 6.5" Skar EVL-65 units. They handle 400 watts each. These sound like a pair of 10's. I had a hard time going with small subs but these things beat hard enough to have people notice.

Finished! Here is the 2 ported subs under my rear seat. They are so loud that the neighbors came over and could not believe they were 2 6.5" Subwoofers. All my future builds are going to have to be thought out more extensively. These things are deep and loud.

Excellent write up.

I checked some local sources for building me a custom box and quoted me $250-$400. I’m considering building my own to save a few bucks. A 8ft by 4ft Sheet of 3/4 mdf is only 25 bucks...

I like MDF but birch sounds better to me. I know its trivial but in my mind it makes a difference. Have the place cut the sheet in half, make it easier to move and my lowes did it for free.

Researching subs and saw your review on the skar website, lol

I think I’m going to go that route with the skars. $120 for 2 seems like a decent deal. I’m thinking of forward facing them a sealed box though.

I think you will love them. Just make sure they are ported in a properly sized box. Otherwise they will not be loud enough, in my opinion.

It's guys like you that make me appreciate forums like this. Well versed. Better than an owners manual.

I'm thinking of doing the same but with their 8inch. From what I've seen their stuff hits hard with enough power. Did you use a program to build the box and figure the needed port size for tuning? From what I've read these small subs are finnicky with the box design and size.

Just finished mine. Skar evl 8inch with skar 1200 amp. This thing hits. I wish I had designed it to fire forward but the sub was too big for the angle I put in the enclosure. I used the cigarette lighter for the remote and a kicker line out converter tapped into the speaker wire in the passnegerside b pillar. All in all pretty decent.

Did you opt for the dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm for these subs?

I’m very new to this so I am going to model my build as close as possible to your setup.

Also, did you mess with upgrading the other speakers at all? (Soundbar, tweeters, etc)

Wondering if that amp would handle additional upgrades.

Thanks in advance!

Nice! I am researching a new stereo for my 21 Mojave. I would love a McIntosh however it’s not available on Gladiators. Currently have stock POS system. Anyone have a recommendation? Full system w/ sub
