  1. Hitch Skid Choice

Used the Body Armor version in the past. May go to the small aluminum style to save weight on cross country trips with the trailer. But that sound when it scrapes... Old fashioned blackboard squeal! Also chose aluminum skid plates to save weight.
  2. Whatever happened to the Mopar 318 engine?

Still running a 5.2 "Magnum" with a 5-speed NV3500. It's been all over the country, on and off road. Keeping it to teach the kid stick shift. So easy compared to the JT, you can hardly stall the thing. But the JT's transmission is much nicer to shift. The old truck has this really long...
  3. 22 Gladiator Sport replace OEM tires

I did 265/70R17. Same diameter as the stock highway tires so same accel and towing, but wider for handling, plus LT-E for offroad, and it's a very common size so you are more likely to find a replacement in some small town if you need to.
  4. Older Guy Doing Research, With Questions

Hard to tell if you can get a low range transfer case, but if so you may want to look at a Dodge Durango, for step-in height. And look into whether you can get some LT tires for the wheels. Or some other SUV with a decent tow rating.
  5. Which Tow Mirrors?

Smaller trailer, less gear. Folding A-frame trailer, Trail Manor, pop-up, tear drop, tall tear drop, etc. And less gear. Last time we went to the Rockies, I had too much gear. The back end was sagging, the headlights were aiming into the eyes of oncoming traffic. The rear tires were getting...

  7. AUX Battery Replacement Experience and FYI

Last winter I did both the night before we were due for some sub-zero days. In the dark, in the rain, from below. Misery. Next time I think I'll get the Genesis thing which puts the AUX above the fuse box, but I don't really like how much room their main tray takes.
  8. Questions about rear LCA skids

No matter what you get, prime and paint them before install. Aftermarket part powder coat often fails within a year. Meanwhile, primed and painted MetalCloak rear sway bar bracket re-enforcement brackets still look great after two winters. Also, many of these skids work by wrapping around the...
  9. Parking brake repeated fail - what to do next...

Look for purple locktite. Low strength, designed for set screws and such, resists vibration. But it may require really opening up the center console to apply.

  11. Tire plug kit suggestions wanted

Used a generic a few decades ago. It worked and lasted the rest of the life of the tire. Recently used a Safety Seal. Was a small nail hole so it took a lot of effort to get the thick awl through that hole. So get a quality tool. Interesting tip: With the first one it was already flat, and...
  12. Im looking for more reviews on the Oracle Skid Plate with Integrated LED lights??

For any steel product from any vendor I'd now recommend an additional prime and paint before install. Too many products start rusting out in the first year.
  13. Is using auto start stop worth it?

By default, in suburban traffic, you have the thing stopping and restarting every minute or so, often for just a second or two, unless you deactivate it and then there go any benefits of this expensive complicated system. And with stick shift the timing can be such that sometimes it throws a...
  14. Does Royal Purple's rear gear oil have enough of a slip additive or will I need to add in addition to it?

I guess I should clarify that when I said to do figure-8s in the parking lot, I meant to drive slowly turning each way listening for knocking sounds from the back. Going left/right/left/right helps mix the stuff into the clutch plates, and doing this a few times can stop the clunking. Of...

  16. Tail Gunner Taillights from Combat Offroad!

Especially if you have a cap, the look ends up being similar to an old International Scout, Bronco, etc.
  17. Tail Gunner Taillights from Combat Offroad!

Don't underestimate the ability to replace the lighting units for cheap. So many vehicles are running around now with blown LED segments, in one-off modules costing hundreds to replace.
