I did a little more testing and actually the noise follows the status of the touchscreen. When it's on it squeels, when it's off it's quite, so it's more specific than just the headunit getting power. It's the screen getting power. just FYI.

Thanks for the confirmations. It seems this is somewhat unique to my situation and therefore a possible problem with the Jeep's headunit (or possibly my own head). I'll update if I can make any progress with the dealership in diagnosing it. -Richard

I don't think that's possible any more. I have a shell on already and when I did the DMV inspection they said it didn't matter. Because it has a bed the shell could be taken off and the vehicle loaded up which would cause more wear on the road.
