If only they made them so the existing plastic back configuration could remain accessible on the Mojave – can't win them all! Definitely stoked to have something covering the seats with all the mountain adventures / home reno projects that lay ahead...

I just got mine and was about to install – and ran into the same problem for the driver and passenger seat headrests. I absolutely agree with OP – pretty hokey – but it as others pointed out, it insures a very solid fit. That all being said – there's literally no instruction in this box...
