made my own bike carriers out of Thule bike trays and the square holes for one inch tube on the racks. I used one inch aluminum C channel from Home Depot, very thick and bolted them to the trays

with side mounted bike, doesn't stick out past the fender

and of course we are subtracting that from the payload capacity which includes people in the vehicle. Wouldn't want to carry to much extra.
