I'm feeling that they installed the battery in backwards like you were thinking. That would send 24v out when the ess activated. It would be meltdown! Fuse probably wouldn't blow because it was switched to the negative side of the battery.

When I opened the hood. Some wiring was burning just below the fuse box next to the secondary battery.
