So I just went ride as a test with the hard top off freedom tops on. Has anyone else done this? They felt pretty secure. Figured it would be nice for blazing summer days with doors and hard top off but freedom tops for shade.
A lot of good info (some over my head) I didn’t realize it was that easy to swap in rubicon locking differential into a sport model.
I also realize some of you out there are hitting some serious terrain! I have to drive 200 miles to find rocks!
I recently purchased a gladiator and am learning about off roading from this forum. I see a lot of people change to new axles as an upgrade. What is the quality of the stock gladiator sport axles? And what off road conditions are people worried about damaging axles? Is it a direct blow from a rock?
My brother also explained to me the suspension set up on my gladiator. (Solid front axle instead of independent front suspension, rear coils instead of leaf springs, He showed my my sway bar)
Hung out with my brother this weekend who has a hummer. He advised against "mudding" also. Said a four wheeler threw mud through his window and he still has been unable to get all of the mud out of AC ducts, cracks in the plastic trim pieces etc.
He lives in Shreveport and goes on a few trails...
Y’all don’t laugh at me. I am a total noob to all things off road. I now own a gladiator and want to learn more about 4 wd, suspension, recovery winches, aired down tires. I even need to learn more about cars in general. Is there a “Jeeps for dummies book” ?
I opted for the worm gear hand winch thinking I would drive it with my drill... like the j Barr. If anyone has an ideas how to make that happen please
Speak up. I can turn the gear clockwise with the nut that comes on it. But counter clockwise unscrews the nut instead of turning the winch ?
Thanks to everyone who shared info on these DIY j barr type hoists. Mine is almost done. Pics coming soon. I chose to use square tube aluminum wrapped in pipe insulation instead of 2 x 4. Opted for hand winch worm gear type. Making grommets through the webbing was very difficult for me...
Well mounting a hoist on the ceiling will not be an option.... not enough clearance. I’m gonna return the hoist and I guess go with the harbor freight winch
That makes sense... standing next to the top to guide it down. Pulley thing makes sense also to give more
Clearance. Now I just need to figure how to mount the winch so it doesn’t trigger the safety stop when wall mounted. The smaller winch may actually crank/ move slower which would be a plus.
Northern tools 110 lb but the 220 lb was on sale and less money I just figured the smaller winch was easier to deal with..... honestly I’m thinking of going get a boat trailer hand winch to keep things more simple..... thoughts?
:CWL:
im still nursing a shoulder after surgery and figured mounting a smaller/ lighter winch to the ceiling would be easier. Then I see this set up with the pulleys and think “duh” just wall mount the hoist!
