The clup slides sideways grasp both sides of the clip move sideways and hose literally lifts off. What zi had trouble with was getting the new O-ring back into the valve cover . I have big hands and there is but a few scant inches there. . I literally struggled for hours.. finally figured out it...
It isnt often I tow either. But when I do its my pop up camper and or a 800-1000 pound payload . Towing to me is anything that actually works the truck like 3000-5500#'s mine is supposed to tow 7000 but I aint never done nor will I ever try. I didnt buy it for anything seriously heavy towing...

I was always told and read that the frint with the slow travel of 4wd it breaks in slowly over time and the rear takes the majority of the stress.

Could you have drilled a hole in the bed rug and then unbolted the D-rings and bolted them back ? Or are you just taking about the rear permanent D- rings
Yes ypur right 1 mpg sounds trivial until your rolling 2500-2900 miles a month and averaging about 30-35k a year. That is why I have done all that work to mine. It was a necessity.
