Just a follow-up:
I changed both batteries today and the ESS is working as intended.
Thanks to all who pointed me in the battery direction.
I just need to remember to hit the ESS switch after every start or invest in an elimination dongle.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like the batteries are the most likely cause of the start/stop not functioning.
I’ll get a meter on them or maybe just replace them, since they’re almost three years old.
