I have a brand new 2024 Gladiator and have only used 4H a few times. When I switch to 4H I notice that the steering wobbles a bit when I turn tightly. Is there some step that I am overlooking? Is there some kind of lock that is not disengaging?

The lock that is not disengaging is 4wd. That’s the nature of it. When you turn, the tires don’t turn at the same speed. The outside tire has to turn faster to keep up with the inside tire. So now you have all four tires turning at different speeds, that’s where the wobble comes from.

AVOID making turns (especially TIGHT ones) while in 4WD. What you're probably feeling is the driveline binding up...... when the steering wheel wobbles (as you call it) or if the Jeep bucks or doesn't move..... DO NOT FORCE IT.

When the wheels are turned, it's much more difficult for the power to transfer thru the shafts/CV's when they're bent/turned versus when they're straight. Even on slippery surfaces....the power transfer is still the same (the slippery surface just prevents you from further binding up the driveline).

Say for example...you're in a snowy parking lot in 4WD and you're trying to turn into a parking spot.... When you turn, your truck will more likely PLOW forward than it will 'driving' into the turn itself (if that makes sense).

Bottom line, Dont shift into 4H or 4L when driving on (dry) pavement, or else you can cause damage to your Jeep

You're feeling the u joints on the front axle shafts speed up slow down. This is just nature of their design. Same concept as drive line angles having to match when you have a lift kit otherwise you get vibation. Some XR's with the full time t-case and 392 JL's have cv front axle shafts to avoid this. Also why front wheel drive cars have cv's front axles.

Normal feeling in sharp turns and high traction situations.

Anyone "avoiding tight turns in 4HI" clearly doesn't wheel anything remotely technical. Yes it's normal because of the ujoints in the front axle. You aren't going to hurt anything.

You can swap to CVs from auto 4Hi equip variant wrangler/gladiators if its too annoying. But I use trail turn lock A LOT on mine, so she's shuddering and dragging anyway. I'll keep my weak link easily replaceable for now.

I hate when people argue the ujoint being the weak link is a good thing. 9 times out of 10 it breaks at least one of the ears and often smacks the ball joint out removing the knuckle. Sure it's all replaceable, if you carry a bunch of spare parts but I'd rather break an axle shaft any day of the week.

I’ve broken multiple across multiple vehicles and it never took the knuckle out. That’s sounds pretty serious. Mine have always just broken the caps clanged around until you stop. I drove home on one cus I figured 2wd couldn’t stress the front anymore. What your talking about sound like deliberately smacking a speed wheel into an instant stop hard rock wedge. But I can see why if ur rough stuff leads to breaking ears then spare u joints is stupid. I’m still gonna go CVs next time around though.

The step you’re missing is that you shouldn’t use 4x4 when all 4 tires have good traction.

Tell us you've never been to Moab or done the rubicon without telling us. Many times you'll have traction, until you don't, on climbs so steep you couldn't possibly make it in 2wd. Yes, you'll feel the uJoints increasingly more uneven distribution of power the more you turn. No you don't shift out of 4wd or "just don’t turn sharp".

lol I’ve never been to Moab or done the rubicon. Still doesn’t change the fact that OP is turning while using 4x4 in a high-traction scenario when the manual suggests 4x4 for slippery surfaces only. Turning into a parking spot at target is not worth the possible damage to your driveline.

I agree with turning into parking spots, but if you wheel technical trails you will make tight turns in 4wd period.

Agree: sometimes circumstance dictate courses of action that aren't ideal. I think we've all been there in some form or other.

If you need to turn sharply regularly while in 4WD you probably should have bought the Select trac for the CV joints. I know I wish I had opted for it now.
