Mine was ordered in Sep. it’s still on order and should get done next week.

HOWEVER, the stage is being closed tomorrow which WILL cause additional delays.

So yea, COVID lockdowns are making problems worse. Blame your Nazi government too if ya want.

You are NOT making monthly payments to FCA....even if you think you are.
Huh ? What on earth does this have to do with anything whatsoever ? But, your dangling conspiracy carrot has piqued my interest ...

If not FCA, who am I paying ?

Some dark web underground money laundering group based in a country that doesn't really exist ?, A china based investment group funded by a shadow government ? Aliens ?

If Aliens maybe they make better steering boxes ?

2% ? Where did this number come from ? Maybe you should drive one with the steel box before forming an opinion ?

I'm sure that some people are "getting a new one just for the sake of it" but these things don't just pop up out of thin air ... Go to any public place where people complain about things (youtube, wherever) and look for gladiator issues ... The steering has come up in dozens of places over and over WELL BEFORE FCA announced their acknowledgement that there "may be an issue" ... It is likely the most common complaint. Even before the defect was acknowledged, reviewers all over the internet in many different forums referred to the steering being "sloppy". It is a common theme. This would suggest a rate of far more than 2% that I imagine was PFA "Plucked from air" ...

And as you have pointed out, they are in business to make money ... TSB's and Recalls are very expensive and avoided to the highest degree possible ... And yet there IS a steering box TSB ... Why do you think that is ?

Even on this forum (which is a complaint magnet), the most common serious issues are the steering and engine misfire issues ... The rest of issues although legit do not seem widespread ...

My engine runs perfect (smooth as glass) but I'm not on here telling the folks with engine noise that it is in their heads ...

These are gen 1 vehicles. They are largely great. They also have several pervasive issues that FCA is working to fix while providing extremely poor communication to its client base ...

The theme of this thread and most of the others is clearly that people:

1) Love the vehicle generally
2) Appreciate that there IS a TSB and that the issue is being acknowledged
3) FCA seems to do the right thing generally
4) FCA communication is poor and is the root of most of the frustration discussed here ...

And, ya know, if ya don't like the thread, move along then ... There is a lot of reading material here.
I actually have driven one with a steel box and that's why I have a opinion on it and the 2% is coming from the dealership I deal with based on their monthly meetings and the discussion they are having about it internationally. It's a small amount which seems a lot bigger because people want to jump on this forum and complain. My Two buddies I golf with that work for Hendricks, and I'll keep their names out of it, but they said they doubt they will ever do a full recall because it's such a small number. I showed them some of the comments and they it sucks but dealerships hands are tied because FCA is going to build new Jeep's before they offer parts to people that have already signed on the bottom line, it's just how it is. All Car manufacturers would handle it this way, they are about selling new cars. If it was a Full Recall then it would be a different story.

As far as a steel box one versus mine, I saw or felt no difference in how mine drove or rode compared to the Sport s Max tow I drove. The whole reason I drove one was to see if I needed mine swapped. I actually preferred how mine is setup now over how the regular stock one rode and drove. Just my 2 cents. If you need a new one get one, or wait on them to get them. Also a TSB is not a recall, it's just them noting that their is a issue with the steering box and if you need one then they wi replace it,like a guide for the dealership to go by. A recall is across the board no questions asked we are replacing this part for free if you bring it in.

So if Chrysler is making this a recall, at least that's the reason I was given by my dealership, then I wonder how much longer this will drag out and if it affects people coming up on their 36k warranty
If it becomes a recall, being out of warranty won’t matter: it will be fixed for no charge.

If not, then any costs for the TSB outside of warranty will be on your dime. In that event, @Ravenron ‘s advice is solid: make sure your dealer records the complaint and get some confirmation in writing.

I think more than 2% on this forum think they have a problem with their steering box, that's probably is a fact.

This is good advice and what I did with my dealership, they noted it, I got their comments on it documented on it at my last oil change. They noted that I expressed concerns over the steering but was showing no signs at the time of having issues. If it does become a issue they will replace the steering box at no cost to me, parts a labor. Make sure you get a copy of it as well. I'm not going to get something replaced if I'm not having a issue. I'm not questioning anyone either if you do got a bad one, I 100% support anyone getting it fixed if it's bad. It's the people doing it just because that seems crazy to me and it's those people you can thank for FCA not jumping through hoops to replace the truly bad ones in a timely manner.

Keep in mind FCA does not get to decide if this becomes a recall or not. The NHTSA will have the final say.

FCA has been caught diverting recall repair parts to keep building new vehicles before and got their hand slapped for it. Obviously they will care even less about TSB warranty recall parts than recall parts.

i'm entirely confident that your 100% honest dealership that is definitely not hoping for you to come back in a few years to buy another vehicle from their brand is not going to downplay a widespread problem as much as possible. nothing to see here, folks. you're all imagining the loose steering.

Not just dealership, good buddies of mine and I trust what they are telling me and they were in no way downplaying it, just stating a fact that's it's not as bad of a problem as it is being made out to be. Definitely a problem, but in the grand scheme of things a small problem in comparison to how many are sold and how many are going bad. Going bad and just getting one because are 2 different things.

Recalls are covered, PERIOD. Warranty or not.
TSBs are covered while still under warranty - once the warranty runs out, it's on you.
(UNLESS you have a prior complaint on file before warranty expires - then it keeps going forward until resolved)

It's all speculation right now - dealers don't seem to know squat and are guessing or speculating at best.

I know it sucks having bad steering but I'm about sick of seeing a new thread started on the issue every week. It sucks but in reality they probably don't care because it's only like 2% of owners are having a issue. I still got my aluminum box and have had no issues. Some are bad some not, 15,000 miles on mine and no issues. People running out without issues and demanding a new box, you can think those people for your delay. FCA are in the business of making money and if you think your going to get a by back because of a bad steering box, your dead wrong. If they are making a effort to fix it and a fix can be done, it doesn't matter how long it takes, there isn't a judge going to force a by back. Plus Covid may not be a good excuse but plenty of stuff has shut down over it. I'm in the building material business and we got stuff on back order for months because of Mills shutting down. Sucks but it's reality. Glad mine drives awesome
WRONG. It's not a judge that handles these - it's the state AG.
In Iowa it's SO simple. The criteria is spelled out and it's amazing how easy it is to get the lemon law thing going. If I go in I believe it's 3 times and still no fix, or if they have the truck over xx days, it's lemon law - end of story. The days don't even have to be consecutive.

Where's the 2% come from? Pulling a number out of the air. That's where.

You says yours is fine - I suggest you compare first. Too many people have seen a night and day difference - even many who didn't think it was all that bad to begin with.
I didn't think mine was bad, not really, wander - yes, can't drive one handed and try to eat your ice cream cone..........
Then my wife complained about it. I took it to the dealer, the tech drove my truck, and checked some things out and an hour later came to me saying it had a problem. I let them decide, I just asked them to look and tell me if my wife was right or if I was right. I didn't even say "my truck has a steering problem - fix it"
Now I can actually take my eyes off the road for 2 seconds, stay between the lines a lot more easily, no more wander at all, and it drives just like my Chevy did.
There's no such thing as this "it's a Jeep thing" or "it's a solid axle thing" - both are bull shit.
My truck handles as well as anything else I've driven (the exception is I won't compare it to the modern Grand Cherokee as those have quick ratio RACK AND PINION steering)

If this was a solid axle thing - then every WJ on the road would be wandering around and steer like crap. They don't - they steer as well as any car, better than some - and the WJ is a solid axle SUV. Mine is as easy to drive as any car - and it's got over 127,000 miles on it.
So don't go pulling this solid axle bull or "it's a Jeep thing" as I've driven a number of solid axle Jeeps. Maybe if you go back to the CJ era............. but not in recent years.
There is zero reason for a solid axle vehicle to not steer like any other on a paved surface, it's that easy. I've done alignments since I was a teen, hundreds of vehicles of all sorts - meaning I've test driven hundreds of vehicles and know about steering geometry.

I have proof.
I have 3 NOS (new old stock) Eagle front hub assemblies still in the original boxes. The box is clearly marked Romulus - so Romulans made those hubs.
I had no idea we were in any trade agreements with the Romulans.
Klingons, I might believe.
But I'd prefer dealing with the Vulcans.
