I got this email and although I used to set these things up for casino customers back in the day I was curious if anyone else got one:

Dear Vehicle Owner:

An automobile manufacturer is inviting a select number of certain Vehicle Owners to participate in a vehicle event taking place online on either Wednesday, September 9th or Thursday, September 10th, 2020

At past studies, our guests have found the experience informative and enjoyable. You will have the opportunity to give your opinion to the automotive industry regarding current and future vehicles and you would receive between $175.00 for 90 minutes of your time as a thank you.

This is strictly a research study. At no time will anyone attempt to sell you anything or contact you at any time after the study.
I’m going to go through the process and see whats what.

So I attended, the check actually cleared and there was no NDA so I thought I would share.

Moderator asked about the hardtop. Ease of use, ease to store etc.... The idea floated out was a more modular hard top (more pieces) so that 1 person could easily take it off.

THEN.... stuff got real.... Moderator asked us what we thought about a modular hard top that you stored on the bed like a tonneau cover. Like the pieces would click into the bed and form a tonneau. I immediately sh*t on the idea because it seemed that when the top was on you couldn’t then use a tonneau cover or else you would have to remove it to then store the top. Some responses were positive for this type of deal but those people don't run a tonneau cover currently.

What say you about a modular hard top that snaps in the bed to store and forms a tonneau cover of sorts?

Bad idea for the reasons YOU stated.
What if it's raining and you need the roof AND the cover? What about winter? That would never fly here. I want a cover on at all times. That either-or choice is bad.
So how would parts of a hard top do that? There are curves, flanges, how would that "snap in" to the box? Rails?
I don't care for the idea of a "modular roof" either - more leaks, more latches, more squeaks and rattles. If you have a bad back like me - get help or build a hoist for literally under 100 bucks. I bet I don't have even 50 in mine.
Naw, can't see it being practical at all.
Just think about it - the hard top - section that off so that the parts come off easily, imagine seals and latches, and how it would store in chunks or on the bed as a cover with the corners and curves. Draw it out and see how it works on paper.
