As I was drinking a nice cold beer while sitting my 230 lb butt on the tailgate (during a grass cutting break) it occurred to me that I don't know what the weight limit is on the tailgate. Anybody know???

I need to get 20 sheets of drywall, mix of 5/8 and 1/2, total weight will be 1100lbs, assuming the weight is distributed across the two boards in the bed and the tailgate, I should be ok for a 3 mi trip, right?

Yes, you could theoretically balance all that directly on the open tailgate and it would hold it.

but it wouldn't fit in the down position, I have to use the middle position to fit 4x8 sheets.

Mid position is 500 lbs and like you said, it’ll be supported by the wheel wells too. Should be fine.

you could always get some blocking and put the tailgate all the way down with blocks on top to hold it if it made you nervous.
