Are transfer cases interchangeable from diesel Rubicon to Overland/ Sport? Going from 4:1 to 2.7:1.

Is this the same transfer case on all the diesels with just different internal gear ratios?

For what I do, in 4L, 4:1 makes 1st and 2nd gears on my diesel virtually obsolete, and I'd rather trade for more wheel speed.

Has anyone made this swap on their Rubicon, or swapped in a Rubicon transfer case?

All Gladiators have exactly four transfer cases regardless of engine*.

  • 4:1 Rock-Trac Full Time 4WD t-case
  • 4:1 Rock-Trac HD Part Time 4WD t-case
  • 2.72:1 Selec-Trac Full Time 4WD t-case
  • 2.72:1 Command-Trac Part Time 4WD t-case
* - ok, well, I guess the diesel cannot be equipped with the full-time variants.

And, as far as I'm aware, all four of these physically are interchangeable. The only gotchas are the computer and specifically in regards to the full-time variants.

On the JK platform I've heard of people who swapped their Sport t-case out for one from a Rubicon, and I can honestly see no reason the reverse wouldn't be true - even for our Gladiators.

I'm interested in hearing if anyone knows more though.

I believe the bolt pattern is different from the 850 transmission to the 875 ( the diesel has the larger transmission). AMW machines a billet from half to adapt the 875 trans to the non diesel case. This is due to them using the 875 transmission in their V8 installs.
