Auto or 6-Speed....and why

Manual all the way. I learned to drive on my friend's $400 manual VW beetle (with no driver side floor pan). First 2 trucks were manual. First 2 jeeps were manual. 3 Motorcycles were manual. 2 ATV's were manual. Current (3rd) jeep is manual. Last vehicle I will ever need - manual JT. I'm not concerned with towing. Traffic isn't much where I will live. Less chance of being stolen or borrowed. The wife can drive manual, but hates it, so 100% chance she won't borrow it. Manual is enjoyable. Plus, I saw a video where the JL's auto trans sensor malfunctioned and the guy had to be towed of the trail because the jeep will not start without it and was broke down until the part was delivered.

If you are trading in it doesnt matter at all and if you are selling private many people like my self seek out manual trans since they get more and more rare each year.

One thing I have come to realize over the years is that the dealer doesn't care what your trade-in is or what it has, he is only going to give you a set price for it and that's it. Buy what you want and don;t be concerned with trade-in value cause KBB is what they go by.

I love a manual but have never found them fun on SUVs or Pickups. The throws are long, I never need heel/toe in them, and most of the time the vehicles are so slow that your not shifting that often. So with that said its Auto for me.

If we are talking about a sports car or classic car manual is always the answer even if they are slower (like in the new 991 Porsches)

I was planning a manual for sure, as I'd love to keep the $2k and it's more fun - wife won't be a problem since her daddy raised her right and she drives a stick.

In the past year though, the towing capacity, several days of stop n go traffic, and the fact that I have bought a 'fun' car with a stick recently, have all swayed me toward the auto.

There is one performance area that the manual exceeds the auto, admittedly by a very minimal amount and unimportant to most people, however the manual is better at going slow with an 84:1 4x4 low ratio. I don't remember but the auto is 70 something to 1.

Oh did I mention rowing your own is more fun!!!

You can't really compare crawl performance between auto and stick based on ratios alone - you will never be able to slip a clutch as long or as much as a torque converter can slip. An auto let's you use higher engine RPMs for a given wheel speed, which translates to more available torque.

Bluetooth, and skills. I’ll contiue buying manual transmissions cars and trucks as long as I can. Whether automatics are better on fuel, better towing, faster or whatever the reason an automatic is better than a manual, it will never take away the sheer fun I have with a manual transmissions. At the end of the day I never buy a car for it to be a point a to b car. Every single time I jump in my car whether it’s for groceries, going to work, traveling, going for a drive I truly get excited and enjoy the drive.

That being said, manual for me.

With the push button start, can you still bump start a manual JL if the battery is dead?

In the past, that was one advantage the stick had over the auto. As long as your alternator was working you could never get stranded.

I think so. You should still be able to get in the "on" position as long as you push the button as if you are starting it without holding the clutch. Just my guess though.
