I saw my first sport, not sure if it was a sport s or not, but I noticed the sides of the grille are blocked off. No airflow except for a small hole at the bottom. Is the Rubicon like this? I figured they would want ultimate airflow.

No idea if this photo shows anything, can somebody else show some pics?

If my dirty acres insert goes behind this blocked off area, you'll only see part of the flag.

EDIT: I read the dirty acres directions and this whole diamondlike black insert is removed before the dirty acres insert is installed.

Since you are from Wisconsin, and have the grille insert, does snow build-up on the insert and impede air flow to the engine? Either from falling snow, or from flung slush.

Thinking about it, though, the increased airflow is desired for improved cooling when towing ... so it shouldn’t matter if the whole grille is occluded while towing in winter, right?

The blocked off grill is the same across all models.
I noticed this when I got my Rubicon a couple of months ago and wondered what all the BS about designing the truck for maximum cooling was about..It seem like they could have easily widened the radiator to increase the cooling capacity.

Also, along those same lines why does the Rubicon hood have those fake vents on them??? If they were really trying to maximize the cooling they could have made real vents...

Hmmmmm...

The issue was the width of the heat exchanger (radiator) whichnis not the full width of the Jeep grill, somthe sides are blocked off to match the heat exchanger/radiator width of the air flow bit.
Cheers

Actually, no - I posted a link somewhere here to the article that explains the cooling and the engineer asked for a wider area for radiator and no, the front end had already been tested and certified for crash, etc. - no way to make any changes so they had to do other things.

Any change to the structure, the radiator support area and so on was off-limits due to that testing/certification already done.

The Rubicon hood vents are only mostly fake. They do allow some airflow from the engine bay. I know this because they will grow foam clouds on the vent if you drive it immediately after washing it if you don't rinse all the soap.

LOL - a Rabicon?

I'd actually like to see that effect.

I thought Rabicon was the gathering of veterinary disease specialists.

But, perhaps for a Jeep show, to put their JT over the top for the trophy, they could do the foam trick or add a bubble maker.
