Hey! Looking for help on understanding what happened and my options are. Did lots of research, but nothing definitive.

My 20 Rubicon got broken into. They shattered the back driver window, either crawled in or then opened door, went straight for ripping out the glove box. With my research and from what the police said, looks like they were trying to steal my truck. But then some anti theft comes into play, thankfully, and stops them. I believe because either the alarm started going off or turning it on went dead and wouldn't start for anyone.

Quick details:
- my keyless fob stopped working
- couldn't manually unlock driver door from outside
- as soon as passenger door or any door opened / remained open, alarm would go off
- emergency start with pressing fob wouldn't work
- this happened in a fairly busy parking lot, around 830pm, right by a bright light pole. Security does patrol in golf carts, but they were charging and weren't at that exact moment (shows me this was planned and scoped).

Questions:
1. What anti theft features did this? And why did they actually not get away with it?

2. Can I simply wait 24hrs, reconnect battery and the fob will work again?

3. Can I get anyone to reprogram it, besides a dealer?

And any other info/insights would be much appreciated.

I will say I am happy and think it's badass that it didn't get stolen.

Thank you for your help!

Not sure what would be in the glovebox. Did they take the whole glove box?

No, just tore it out. I believe behind it is where you can reprogram a Keyless fob to work and that's what they were trying to do

I think that's all through the OBD port, which is under the driver's dash, but I could be wrong.

Watch where youpark, try not to park in places thieves like. Don't leave things in sight. They don't know what inside things, like the bag shown. That may have been the invite. I don't lock my glove box or console. That will only get it torn open. I don't use locking gas caps, that will get your tank punctured. Do what you can to not make it inviting. Sometimes there is nothing you can do

Hate this happened to you! CMPD has been hit hard by all levels of crime lately. Shootings, theft, assault are all up. There are no easy answers to the problem. You did what you should by parking under the light and your roving security can be hit or miss. My best suggestion would be to clear out your truck when you go to work, leave nothing of value and leave all your compartments open and doors unlocked. They'll see nothing they want in it. As for trying to steal the truck, search for hidden kill switch for the JT. When I was LEO, we had a switch under the floor mat on drivers side that had to be pushed before vehicle would go into drive. Not sure if these are made for the JT or not or if they are even still available. I live near High Point and Greensboro and our crime has skyrocketed as well. Fortunately my specific area is relatively safe. Best of luck to you!

That's not where you program FOBs. The security gateway needs to be bypassed to do that.
If they were trying to access things, they went about it the hard way, IMO.
There's a lot of connections there - the various modules come together at that point, but seriously, if they knew what they were doing, there's easier ways.
Maybe they have some bypass cable they can plug in there, but that doesn't get them access to all modules in one fell swoop like getting to the gateway under the steering column.

Anyone with some auto electric experience can rig these things to either not start, or start and not move, by accessing the bottom of the PDC where the relays, etc. are plugged in. Wire up a switch in series with the relay coil for the thing you want to kill or control, run it to a switch inside - and you've accomplished what you mentioned.
HOWEVER, savvy thieves will have ways to drag the truck away without the need to put it in gear.
You can only do so much. Any car can be stolen - well, the new Kias are really very difficult to take without a flat bed truck. And Tesla will tattle on thieves.

I would guess that they were not after the vehicle itself, but looking for places that handguns can be hidden. MANY trucks are broken into looking for weapons. There are a number of cases where they ignore the money and just go after the guns. They skip the vehicles they believe are driven by women, and target the vehicles that guys are driving.

Why, they know you can't take the guns into your place of employment...

In Columbus GA, they skipped my daughters Prius, but hit about a dozen trucks.

I was just looking at the stats for my local areas - and yeah, there's a lot of that going around, too. Common in areas where carry permits are simple to get.
I've found maps of the locations for vehicle thefts, and where they were simply broken into - it's almost always in centralized areas.

This map would seem to indicate that if you don't park in these areas - it ain't gonna be messed with. Every theft was pinned on a map - and they are all within specific areas, almost no exceptions at all.

Those 2 banks of connectors under the glovebox are the CAN C and CAN IP busses... looks like they were trying to tap directly into the CAN Bus and skip the OBD/SGW.

Do you even read what he posted? They most likely ripped out the glove box to get to the electronics.

How do you make a Jeep non inviting? Put a prius body on it?

Yeah, agreed, but unless I'm not thinking of something, seems to be the less easy, less direct way. You can access pretty much anything through bypassing the SGW.
I suppose if they were "advanced" thieves, they may have a device to plug in and get the thing started. But most modules still have a handshake that has to be matched.

Did you look at the picture?

A large bag in plain sight on the back seat. Stuff left inside a vehicle that can be seen is a large attraction to thieves. Going in thru the back window is an indication of that's what they were looking at. Doesn't matter what's in it.

The glove box is on the floor because they pulled it open, possibly from the back seat to see what's in it. The console was probably looked in then closed back up.

Thieves aren't going to take the time to reprogram a can bus system. Smash grab and run is what you have here.

But why didn't they take anything if that's the case?

Op does your horn still work ?
