changing out the head unit

I am thinking about changing out the factory 8.4 head unit for something better and looking for some advice on what to get.

I have the insane audio JL 4001
The best thing about it is all the apps are on the radio like a tablet
No more linking my phone to use apps
I also have a computer hot spot permanently installed in my jeep so as soon as I start the jeep it hooks up
Its not perfect put much better then my wife's 8.4 in here Rubicon
I am also looking at the Navos Gen 5 12.10-Inch T-Style Radio
Has any one installed a Navos Gen 5

i am checking out the alpine restyle right now but keeping my options open

as someone with the 7" who wants the 8.4" I'm curious what you don't like about it.

What I don't like about the 8.4 is it limited ability to display off road maps in full detail
Radios like the JL 4001 are basictly an android tablet and can down load thousands of apps right to the radio
I am used to Marine computer navigation with 12'' monitors and super detail
I have yet to find a GPS like a Garmin or others that even comes close the marine navigation
The tablets and android based radios are the best that I have found so far and I use GAIA / onXmaps / Google earth / google maps /

Word of caution, Insane Audio appears to have went under (JL4001 manufacturer). Their website no longer works and their facebook hasn’t had any updates in months. Lots of complaints from folks who sent radios in for warranty repairs and no response from them. The owners are also complaining of not getting their radios back at all. I have the JL4001 and it works well, much better than the 7 inch stock radio. It does have some shortcomings though, no wireless CarPlay, sometimes mine doesn’t recognize my phone is connected and CarPlay won’t work.

Overall I wouldn’t recommend the Insane Audio head units anymore, mainly due to the company going under and no longer supporting them. But even if they were supporting still, I wouldn’t recommend them at MSRP. I bought a JL3001 from a member here for $850, and the company replaced it under warranty with a JL4001 for free. So prior to going under I do feel they did a good job with supporting their products, but that is no longer the case.

You have to be careful with all those smaller aftermarket companies and really careful with the Chinese 12 imch screen ones. Thise companies seem to come and go.
I have to say I always upgrade my stereo systems in all my vehicles. I was a car stereo installer in the early 90s and got use to top notch sound systems. I did a big system in my last Gladiator and it pumped. I was prepared to do another one in my Mojave, but the 8.4 premium system with factory sub sounds really good, I probably am not going to charge it. I only wish it had more volume. Now my wife's JLU with 8.4 premium sound and factory sub is terrible... I have to change that out.

I ended up going with the alpine restyle . It sounds great but the camera is complete garbage and the car play only connects half the time . Installed this was almost 3 grand . A complete waist of money in my opinion. I should kept the factory unit

Thanks for letting us know. My 8.4 will stay until it fails. Them decide on what to replace it with.

My 8.4 was just fine but I thought the alpine would be better . What a mistake lol.

I still just use my phone for everything. I even use my tablet via my phone while in the Jeep or my truck. I hardly ever turn the display on. Every now and then I turn it on for Xm radio, but then I can still use my phone for that.
