Check Engine Light at 2992 miles

About 9 miles into my 10 mile commute, 45F out.
Dealer's "first available" is 3 weeks.
I sent message to FCA on 3/2.
They sent me the "how did we do survey" today.

Uncertain what to do.
Don't want to take a half a day to go to another dealer.
Really want to know the code, and get remote start back on!

Get a cheap OBDII adapter, and any number of free apps for either your phone or your computer and pull the code. Alternatively any AutoZone will do it.

Yep, get your own scan tool, even the cheap ones on Amazon work fine and are about $20. Torque Pro is the app I use to communicate with it and diagnose.

Don't worry too much yet, it may be something minor. I had a CEL come on early into my ownership that was just a thermostat that wasn't working quite right. Easy 2 hour warranty repair job at the dealership.

Got a cheap elm327 blue tooth, and car scanner app, set it for Jeep obd-ii profile, elm connects, then ECU "connection problem". Guess I'll try another reader.

Anybody have luck with cheap scanner?
I lent my good one and cable to a friend who put on 35" tires, never thought I'd need it.

Note, this is only a reader. If you're looking to actually change any vehicle settings, I'd go with one that can also program (Tazer, JScan, etc).

Is the engine running when you try to pull codes? At the least it should be turned to ignition, not off or accessory.

Ah yes, the yellow orange stellantis welcome light- "its a jeep thing"! Buy any $20 OBD2 scanner and keep it in the jeep. Worth the peace of mind. Since you're under warranty, I wouldn't erase the code, just read it. Unfortunately the build quality of these Jeeps hasn't quite caught up to the price tags. Come back here and post the code(s) you get and we'll try to help.

On my Ram the check engine light would come on when my gas cap wasn't seated as well. Usually after a cold snap. Or does the gladiator show the gas cap?

It'd be a MIL on a Jeep as well - most (all?) vehicles are like that. 99% of faults are a simple MIL. An OBDII scanner is a must of any DIYer with a "modern" vehicle.

I remember throwing a MIL once in a vehicle on a cold start when I threw it into reverse and begain driving much too soon - before all the startup checks were done - and it confused the hell out of the computer. I can't remember what the code was, but simply clearing it was all that was required as it was not a real problem, but more of a "oh shit, the world doesn't make sense, please check this" type of thing.

The vast majority of Jeep owners never see a MIL.
I've owned Jeeps since the late 80s - never have seen a MIL.
Build quality is right in there as good as most others.
Don't go by what you see on the web to determine how common any problem is because the internet and forums are where people gather to gripe and share sad stories and get comfort.

Anyone can get the code and go to Google and type the code in and get great explanations and charts on what they mean. Not rocket science.

I have two BT adapters and multiple software apps on my tablet and phone (including AlfaOBD and JSCAN) but the only time I've ever had to read a code and reset one was on my WJ
My JT has been totally MIL-free.

I need to learn your tricks! I've had 3 TJs, an LJ, a JK and this JT- basically constant wrangler ownership for two decades- and I don't think I've ever gone more than a few months without some sort of MIL/CEL. I love my wranglers, but build quality has never been a strong suit. I'm glad that you've never had an MIL in over 30 years, but I think you're probably the only Jeep owner in history to have that luck! Happy Jeepin' (and teach me your ways!)

so elm327 is tricky and the Bluetooth version will only work with and android phone. If you have an iPhone you have to use the WiFi version of elm327. with most apps you have to go into settings and change the protocol to elm327 as well.

Explain this, I've had a number of jeeps over the years, XJ, TJ, JK, JT, 3 Grand Cherokees and Commander and I only had a check engine light come on in the JK that I fixed myself for $15 by replacing the purge valve. 46,000 miles on the JT and the build quality and engine quality seem pretty lined up with I paid for it compared to other comparables I could of bought instead.
