I was pulling a light trailer yesterday. The weight was light enough so it really does't matter.

But I was running it back and forth a bit to back up and heard a noise. I was in 4H Auto.

It happened like this. I put it in reverse with my foot on the brake and hear a fairly quiet clunk coming from what sounded like the left front. I was on and off the brakes several times in reverse and no noise.

I put it in D and when I let it off the brake I heard the same clunk. I could apply and let off the brake several times and no noise.

I was able to consistently repeat the noise by changing direction. It is not the brake pads shifting because the noise occurs when I let off the brakes.

After triggering the noise with 100% consistency, I switched it into 2H and could not replicate it.
I then shifted back into 4H Auto and could not replicate it.

The tires were on dry pavement so I doubt that the transfer case was giving any torque to the front wheels. So my suspicion is it has something to do with the FAD.

OK since I had such an overwhelming response to my question, I tried to replicate it again with success.

If you have any knowledge on this stuff, I'd really appreciate if you could spend a moment listening to this video.

Thanks.

Ok, I know you said it wasn't the brake pad sticking, but on 2 other Jeeps I've had issues with the caliper adapter (the bracket) having some play where the pins insert (like they were bored out too much). The play caused the caliper pins to have room to wiggle so they were not exactly 90° from the adapter. This, in turn, caused the caliper to stick momentarily when letting off the brake, especially when changing direction like when backing out of a parking space, etc.

I know yours is new, but thought I'd throw that out there...

If only doing it in 4, then I'd suspect the front driveshaft, or the ring and pinion. FAD would only possibly make a noise when you engage 4, as it is just a splined sleeve.

You could possible check for play in all the moving parts by putting it up on jackstands, and trying to move things while listening. Start it, fully engage 4, shut off and put on stands.

Thanks.

I need to check it in 4H rather than just 4h auto. In 4h auto, it really shouldn't be giving any power or torque to the front wheels, but we'll see.

I know this is the kind of diagnostics that dealers suck at, so its worth it for me to spend a bit of time to know what it is.
