I just purchased a 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon brand new. I remote started my vehicle and the windshield cracked while it was parked in my driveway. No damage was sustained to the windshield from debris.

I was reading the manual for the 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and in the "Getting to know your vehicle" section on page #23 it discusses the remote start system. I entered it below:

******
REMOTE START COMFORT SYSTEMS — IF EQUIPPED
When Remote Start is activated, the front and rear defrost will automatically turn on in cold weather. The heated steering wheel and driver heated seat feature will also turn on if programmed in the Comfort menu screen within Uconnect Settings "⇨UCONNECT SETTINGS".

Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) — If Equipped

The climate controls automatically adjust to an optimal temperature and mode, dependent upon the outside ambient temperature. When the ignition is placed in the ON/RUN position, the climate controls will resume their previous settings.

Manual Temperature Control (MTC) — If Equipped

In ambient temperatures of 40°F (4.5°C) or below, the climate settings will default to maximum heat, with fresh air entering the cabin. If the front defrost timer expires, the vehicle will enter Mix Mode.
In ambient temperatures from 40°F (4.5°C) to 78°F (26°C), the climate settings will be based on the last settings selected by the driver.
In ambient temperatures of 78°F (26°C) or above, the climate settings will default to MAX A/C, Bi-Level mode, and Recirculation on.
For more information on ATC, MTC, and climate control settings, see "⇨CLIMATE CONTROLS".

Note:
These features will stay on through the duration of Remote Start, or until the ignition is placed in the ON/RUN position. The climate control settings will change if manually adjusted by the driver while the vehicle is in remote start mode. This includes turning the climate controls off using the OFF button.

REMOTE START WINDSHIELD WIPER DE-ICER ACTIVATION — IF EQUIPPED
When Remote Start is active and the outside ambient temperature is less than 33°F (0.6°C), the Windshield Wiper De-Icer will activate. Exiting Remote Start will resume previous operation. If the Windshield Wiper De-Icer was active, the Windshield Wiper De-Icer timer and operation will continue.

*******

After reading this I wondered if I could place the heat settings to the floor at a lower temperature like 70 degrees so that when I shut the vehicle off and attempt to remote start it again the heat will go to the floor and not the defroster. (mind you it is 26 degrees outside currently) After setting the heat to floor setting, shutting the truck off, and then remote starting it; the truck automatically turned on the defroster on high fan speed at the hottest temperature. I went through all the settings and there is no way to change these settings unless you turn off the cold weather comfort setting all together which defeats the purpose of even having the cold weather group. Based on where the heat from the defroster blasts onto the windshield I would have to say it is the reason the windshield cracked in the middle like a rainbow starting from the bottom of the glass.

Either Corning Gorilla Glass needs to take a look at the actual strength of their glass or JEEP needs to reevaluate the settings within the computer for that feature. Either way the Corning Gorilla Glass is another extra charge for a stronger feature. Many other individuals have posted on Jeep Forums discussing the same issue occurring with their new vehicles that have sustained no damage to create the actual cracking windshield.

I also attempted to contact my extended warranty and they told me the crack is bigger than 6 inches and they are not covering it. This vehicle is brand new with no damage. I am upset about this.

I know this has happened to a few people, but if it is happening more I was hoping it would be a recall. Please post about your vehicle if this happened to you.

I am attaching photos. The cracks started at the bottom of the windshield under the wipers. Throughout the crack in the "rainbow" there is no damage suggesting a rock or debris striking the glass.

The automatic temperature will runs it's course during remote start operation until you hit the start button. Unfortunately, it won't run your preset setting and no selectable options to change it either.

Might be relative to the windshield installation. I've had no issues with my remote start on my windshield in Michigan.

Yeah I think that is what Jeep needs to change so it's no blasting the the hottest setting.

Sorry this happened... I believe this is a design flaw that Jeep should definitely address. Based on the posts I've seen about this on here and in a couple of different Gladiator groups on Facebook, it happens a LOT - and the crack almost always starts over on the passenger side of the windshield near the corner of the glass and travels back toward the driver's side. I'm guessing yours did this too... though I don't recall seeing the crack go quite as far as yours did.

I park outside - and I know I've remote-started mine when several times when the windshield was frosted over this winter (I'm in SC, so we don't get a lot of really cold/freezing weather) - and every time, when I get out to it, that spot on the passenger side is significantly more clear than the rest of the windshield - so either the air coming out at that spot is hotter (closer to the heater core?) - or the volume of hot air is higher/more forceful there for whatever reason. I believe the glass being heated up unevenly like that is what's causing it to crack. Well... that - and maybe the glass is too thin. I wonder if some sort of deflector to redirect or block the air in that area away from the windshield would prevent that from happening? I guess you could just put tape or something on the dash covering the defroster duct in that area as a hack just to see if it helped.

A better fix would be if Jeep would just reprogram the computer to run the system with a 50/50 or 75/25 split of floor heat and defrost when in auto-start mode too instead of it being 100% defrost. I bet that would prevent it as well. A 5-minute re-flash at the dealership would be all that would be required for us to get it.

@JeepCares Has this been investigated? This is clearly a widespread problem with JTs and JLs.

I would re-address the issue with Jeep if the vehicle is brand new. This happens in many types of vehicles where the glass is cold and then heater is turned on or... the car is in the garage and its pulled out into the cold and cracks immediately. More of a stress crack that I would hound jeep on.

Does this only happened with Gorilla glass or regular Mopar ones too?

On 03/26/23 I went on the Jeep.com website and for fun I went to the Build and Price tab. I clicked on 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and on this page there is an option to click on Corning Gorilla Glass as an add on option for building your Jeep.
Then I went back and clicked on 2023 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and on this page there is NOT and option to add the Corning Gorilla Glass Windshield.
Is this because of all the random cracks and issues with Jeep lovers windshields?
Maybe a recall coming?

2021 Gladiator, cracked windshield, no impact, same location as many others reported. Is this a body location flex point? affected by defroster?

After I posted, a few members tagged @JeepCares and a representative reached out. He was very helpful and willing to help. He had me take my truck to my local dealer and they took a look at my windshield. They are working with Jeep to get it replaced. It take a bit but they are going to fix it. Maybe this could be the case for you as well. It’s worth a try.

Yeah I think that is what Jeep needs to change so it's no blasting the the hottest setting.
There’s a serious flaw in this thinking:
the engine starts cold. There’s No Way that you’re going to blow hot air immediately onto a cold windshield: the defroster output will start cold, and slowly warm up as the engine temperature increases. Therefore, the windshield will also warm up gradually. You’re not going to subject the glass to a sudden thermal shock.
