Here is a short write-up on how to color the background trim of the tailgate JEEP logo.
Project time: ~ Two hours (including drying time)

1. Tape off the area around the letters. Note you WANT to spray on the tailgate so you can peel it off the letters (step 3 below).
2. Spray around six good even coats of Plasti-dip and let dry. Hedge on spaying too many coats than too few.
3. Peel away the background. It will easily peel at the edges of the letters
4. Peel away the top layer. Again, this will easily peel away where the two plastic parts meet.

It's very subtle, but matches the rest of the blue around my JT very well.

That is slick man! I saw someone with all black "Jeep" and I am jealous as I think it looks much nicer than the chrome on black.

This looks amazing- but I need some clarification on the steps you took. It looks as if you taped a rectangle around the Jeep logo and sprayed Plastidip on the tailgate and then simply peeled it off the tailgate and the tops of the letters and that resulted in the background trim's blue color being left intact? How did it all not pull off?

Yep, that's it. The plastidip tears cleanly at corners, sharp edges, etc. Just be sure to put on enough coats so it will tear cleanly.

This looks great, just ordered orange and white (base coats) for my sting gray. Gonna do the tailgate and the fender logos, and possibly the grille insert (we'll see how it goes)

I was a little confused by your steps as well, so I jumped on over to YouTube to see a tutorial.

Pretty simple!
I do have a couple questions though...
1. How durable is it? With it peeling off the surrounding area so easily, what would prevent it from coming off the areas you want it to stay?
2. Using your emblem as an example, what if I wanted the trim blue and the main chrome part a different color? Could you do the same process for the chrome?

So, you opted to leave the top of the letters red instead of peeling the top off and leaving only the sides red. I'm new to this concept.
Yep. I think the OP's blue on white really stands out enough to not need the top layer, but I personally didn't think the outer walls alone would pop enough with the tailgate and lettering both being black so I left it all!

Thanks. I have a white Gladiator and am adding red accents and plan on doing what you did! Leaving JEEP all in red. I ordered two cans! I want to do the sides of the rain gutters above the doors, too. I am thinking about doing the door hinges, also. Any ideas?
