Just a PSA for those of you in cooler climates.

At just over 5 years old and 65k miles my battery finally died. I knew it was coming as the ESS stopped working a few months ago. Luckily I was home when it happened. I hit the start button and nothing. Volts are at 11.5 and accessories still work.

Don’t be stranded like so many others have been, check or replace batteries before the cold weather moves in.

FWIW the Jeep AutoNation Southwest (Littleton CO) just quoted me $1200 for both battery changes. Haha, I guess I’m going the genesis route.

You can get a 94R AGM Battery from Walmart for about $175 with a four year warranty. When I needed batteries, I bought ACDelco from Amazon (make sure Amazon is the seller). I recently found a Aux14 Battery on Amazon for about $90.

Thanks all. I am definitely doing it myself. Good call on charging ahead of time. I’ll do that while I am doing the tear down

I would say to replace them both at the same time. I had the same experience with dealership charges. Ended up doing it myself with some forum advice on resetting the IBS and charging them up before dropping them in the truck.
IBS?

Intelligent Battery Sensor. It is attached to the negative post of the Main Battery. The data it provides is used by the charging system to make decisions for things like alternator output.

I’ve been getting random occurrence of error message “start/stop unavailable, service start/stop system”. I keep my batteries on a maintainer when it is parked for several days at a time and I think it has helped keep the oem batteries in service for 50k and 5 years.
that error must be trying to tell me something, so I ordered the ACDelco Aux14 from Amazon and picked up a Walmart EverStart Platinum so I can preemptivelay swap them out before I get stranded, just waiting for the aux to arrive.
Meanwhile I’m wondering if anyone has some good ideas on how to wire in a disconnect so the batteries can be isolated for accurate readings without having to physically unbolt the negative cables each time to get a reading. I’m thinking a small panel with a volt meter and a switch or solenoid that leaves the batteries connected as a default but allows momentary disconnect so each battery can be checked independently..

I don't about the rest of you, but dealing with the battery and electronics issues on my two jeeps has given me Irritable Bowel Syndrome:)

Maybe the name of that part is an insider Jeep engineer's joke...

Here is an update.
I went with an AC Delco battery similar to the Amazon link from above.
Amazon said shipping could be up to a month so luckily I found the same one and same price at Walmart https://www.walmart.com/ip/49453231?sid=bcdb988b-619e-4ec7-b218-696db4b988b7
Shipping was fast, 2 days.

I also found the aux battery at batteries plus locally for the same price as the Amazon link above.
The tear down wasn’t as bad as I was expecting after hearing what a pita it is. Don’t get wrong, it’s overly complicated and dumb, but I figure once every 4-5 years isn’t so bad.

I really wanted a genesis set up, but with the wife getting laid off this month, the extra money wasn’t worth it.

finally, for those of you with the tazer, how long do your batteries last with the ESS turned off? When funds allow, I may just buy that for its other benefits as well.

thank you all.

ps- my new ACDelco battery took over 8 hrs on the battery tender to come to full charge. It is a low amp trickle style and battery management, not a dedicated 3+ amp battery charger.

I have a 21 delivered that September that I bought last June (23). Tazer installed the next month and still have the original batteries. I'd expect the next year to tell me if that's saving me from new batteries as it seems the record is around 4 without.

The big killer of the batteries is heat and not keeping them charged. Use (or not) of ESS has no significant impact on the life span of the batteries. The average life expectancy of batteries in the JT is about three years. Living in moderate and cooler climates and keeping the batteries charged can get you up to five years out of a set. The OEM batteries leave a bit to be desired, and usually last just beyond the warranty period for most of us.

Mines a 2023 Glad, leased it last march, Took it into the dealer to check batteries. They showed no problem.Volt meter in truck always shows an average of 14.5 , overnight it would go to 12.3. They still said it was OK. Now overnight it will be at 12.1 volts. I have a avreage of a 2 hour run at least every two weeks. Now with the cold weather comming ,I'm worried about it not starting in a remote area. I'm glad I leased the Glad. I figure jeep would rather have you stranded with a dead battery than fix the problem. I live in a condo , so it's hard to have a battery charger hooked up. I figure maybe I should get one of those battery starters and keep it charged. I feel this is the last jeep I will own. With the price they charge for them , you would think the company would use quality batteries.
