Saw this on the JL forums:

https://media.stellantisnorthamerica.com/newsrelease.do?id=24327&mid=52

I'm extremely surprised they would carry the diesel on in the JT with it going away in the JL. The only thing I can imagine is that they wanted to have at least one additional engine option for the JT and the take rate maybe better with diesel being a more natural fit with the truck crowd vs. suv crowd.

So I guess we aren't quite as much of unicorns, but as others have posted this will help ensure parts and support are available for a much longer period of time.

Here's the quote from the news release:

The Jeep Gladiator will continue to offer the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 in addition to the standard 3.6-liter V-6.

Makes sense that the diesel would fit the JT better than the JL IMO. The JT is better for towing, overlanding (good mpg, more storage room, etc.) and hauling stuff. Not sure why a JL even needs a diesel option. Mute point now.

Is it mute point, or moo point? Like a cows opinion? It's moo (or moot maybe...)

Why? The max tow has better tow ratings than any of the others with diesel. It's not tow ratings - they had good ratings with the gas engine.

In some markets it is the only engine option, and in their field anything but a diesel is not seen as competative
EU is one place they'll need the diesel............ it's not "competitive" but necessary for emissions, and so on. And the 3.0 fits the EU rules perfectly.

They may also kept the diesel for CAFE ratings.

What's funny. Chevy up graded their 3.0L diesel output. But dropped it from the Colorado.

It's an up-side-down world these days.
And then I look back and think - were my parents saying the exact same thing over their party line land line in the 50s and 60s?
And where their grandparents saying the same thing over the telegraph?

No way in hell I'd want to tow 7700lbs with a 285ftlb V6. Pass that crack, because it's wack.
