Here in the Midwest diesel is 25% more expensive than gas right now, so the fuel cost is a wash between the two. I want to have a good reason to try the diesel, but can't really come up with much aside from the extra torque :/
When I originally made the chart the prices difference was much further apart and I was quite shocked to still see the cost advantage of the diesel. This doesn’t even take into account the joy of driving it.

If only you could pair it with a manual....
I am very much a #savethemanuals kinda guy, but I gotta admit, the 8HP75 in this thing is frigging mint. It really is a great auto transmission.

I thought FCA said something about never pairing that engine with a manual because the 3.0 was a relatively long stroke engine, and lugging it would be real hard on it.

Also a save the manuals guy here, but my JTRD is not a vehicle I would want a manual with. With a 4500 rpm redline it would just mean constant shifts. The 8 spd really does a nice job and I've never felt that it's not in the right spot or not ready to give me the power I'm desiring.

Plus I have a 9k rpm s2000 that fulfills my manual needs. With that being said, if I had to buy a new truck today and it couldn't be this diesel then it would be a manual Rubi Gladiator.

The diesel feels way more relaxed and powerful than the 3.6, the sound is honestly worth is by itself especially with the top down and doors off, and if you are going above 33" tires it removes any need or thought of regears, the fact that I'm averaging a real world around town mpg of between 23-24mpg with 35"s blows me away regardless of the above.

Someday when the powertrain and emissions warranty's are up there is always Canada as well and tunes that bring it up to 300hp and over 500tq

The Banks Derringer gets it to 317HP, 515TQ and keeps all emissions intact. Seems to burn cleaner, my distance between regens went from 450 miles to 800 miles even with my short 7 mile work commute where the engine barely gets warmed up , on longer trips it’s much longer.

I have the derringer as well and it doesnt get anywhere close to that. It can give a boost of maybe 20-30hp but then the EGT gets so high it pulls power. Also it only adds power at lower rpm.

I’m curious how you’re getting that mpg around town. I’ve had my 22 rubicon for about 2 weeks, and still running the stock tires, and I’m only averaging 20mpg around town. Is there a break in period where it gets better? I’m hoping so because I’m seeing a lot of people saying they’re getting 25mpg, and I’m not even close to that.

no real traffic around GB so I'm never waiting long at stop lights or anything like that, I've never seen the average for a tank go below 22.5 mpg though and that's with 35's on it. My 14' GMC sierra with a 2" lift and 33's and the more mpg friendly gears never got above 16mpg so the diesel markup lately hasn't bothered me a bit.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but try to get to up speed as fast as possible. You will notice once it starts building boost your MPGs will basically drop to around 10-12mpg, but the harder you floor it after that you barely see any fall off. I think you are better giving it the beans and getting up to speed while only averaging 10-12mpg for about 5-10 seconds vs getting slowly getting up to speed all while getting 10-12 mpg. It all has to do with the amount of time you spend there getting up to speed.

Also, your truck sounds pretty new. As you put miles on it MPG will come up by 1-2 mpg after 5K miles.

I have noticed that once you get up to cruising speed the mpg does climb. I also noticed that it really like 65 mph and lower.

Unfortunately you did not account for the nearly 8000$ additional to cover the purchase of the diesel.... Also I get closer to 22mpg mixed with 38" tires and beadlocks. My gasser got 14.5. Once you add large tires the diesel makes so much more sense.

diesel gets a better 100k warranty but the oil and fuel filter changes are much more expensive about 2x.

Here’s a fuel cost chart I made to compare my real world experience with my 2020 JTR 3.6 and my 2022 JTRD 3.0. Both on 37s. Even stock my JTR never saw epa mpg.

And that's the difference. Regular unleaded here is 3.49, and diesel is $5.97. our gasoline is way cheaper than yours, and our diesel is somehow even more expensive than yours.

Diesel here is $4.49. Morgantown WV is $4.39. If I'm down that way. I will fill up there.

$8000???

My Window Sticker shows $4010 for the 3.0 and $2000 for the 8sp automatic which is exactly what the 8sp automatic cost me on my 2020 JTR 3.6. Since I’m not interested in buying a manual it seems to be only a $4010 difference for me. I’d gladly pay that for the power difference even if it didn’t pay for itself in fuel savings. The only way to get this kind of power out of the 3.6 is going to cost more than $4010.
