Just shot video for a review... Coming soon! I'm impressed honestly. The lack of torque on paper vs the Ram isn't very noticeable.

So yesterday I drove the Jeep Gladiator with the EcoDiesel.

- It has ESS, which I love. While sitting at a red light, fast food drive thru line, etc. there is NO fuel being wasted. I have no idea why they didn't do this on the Ram. This is probably why the Jeep guys are reporting much better MPG despite the truck having very similar curb weight.

- It has manual shifting. Another GREAT feature that should have been on the Ram. You can shift the 8HP75 manually with the AutoStick in the Jeep. VERY useful...a lot better than the stupid "gear lockout" feature in the Ram.

- Throttle was great. There wasn't any of the throttle lag, delay, or driveability issue with the Jeep. Press the pedal and it goes. Every time. It felt really good. I wish Ram felt that good. And despite having 38 lb/ft less torque on paper, the Jeep feels every drop as strong as the Ram.

Seems to me like the Jeep and Ram guys at FCA need to share notes.

surprised to hear it has ESS seems the opposite of how generally like to run diesels.

Agree. ESS makes complete sense on a gasser, and no sense at all on a diesel - UNLESS - the turbo is allowed to run and is fed oil during the ESS downtime. I will always run my diesel with ESS disabled.

I'm no expert on the ESS but I've had transporation in Europe and Asia with the ESS type system on Mercedes and BMW's for over I'm guessing a decade. I'm sure they have it worked out.

I have maintained and repaired and managed heavy diesel fleets for 40 years.
I do have faith in many of the new tech improvements in this field, however, to me, the turbo is the most vulnerable component to seizure if not allowed to cool properly, wind down from it’s high rpm with enough time to stop spinning the bearings without oil and kept properly lubricated.
Based on my experience I will care for my turbo with that knowledge.
