i think it would be interesting to see what people think of Engine Stop Start. There are plenty of discussions but I wonder what the numbers are.

I’m on day 3 with ESS and I love it for some reason. I think it’s so interesting. But on my way home today I was pondering why it’s was called ESS when it’s called Automatic Start Stop....

Then I realized what that acronym would be lol

You laugh, but my company did actually use an organization name for a few months that abbreviated to what you just snapped to. It was my organization. I refused to use the full name knowing that our company is notorious for using the abbreviations. Another shining example of rampant stupidity.

The more appropriate AESS just doesn’t work. It violates the three-letter abbreviation rule.

I expected it to bug me, and maybe if my truck was an auto it would, but it is so easy to control with the clutch that I've very quickly gotten used to it - and even prefer it being on. I use it for when I know the stop will be more than 7 seconds, which is the breakover time for the fuel savings of restarting the engine.

With the Fiat-Chrysler reputation on the small battery failing and cars being dead on the road (I am best friends with a service adviser) I had a very bad attitude towards it before I got my JT. Now that i've got it, I find it annoying, because I've had it shut the truck off when parking because I guess I didn't get it into reverse fast enough or something. I am now on the first thing I do after starting the jeep, shut the ESS off, routine, and am about to justify buying one of the devices to permanently turn it off.

Here is a sample of my hand calculated ESS numbers (from my JLU). Notice the signficant dip in MPG for several weeks when my ESS system quit working. As soon as the dealership finally got it fixed, MPG went right back up again. I'm a believer.

I understand crotchety old men who are reluctant to change. Hell, I'm one of them. But if the new tech actually DOES something beneficial, then I can learn to love it.

Yep, you can expect 2-3MPG easily with ESS. The only scenario when it bugs me is when I have the AC on and the engine turns off - at long lights it quickly becomes a little too warm in the cabin. Otherwise, I have no idea why people hate it with how fast it turns back on.

While I appreciate this example, it is a single sample, one user. We don’t have a good control to know all the deltas that could be in play.

Thanks for sharing. I would like to see broader data for various driving areas, say urban, suburban and rural.

I appreciate the effort you put in but honestly 1-3mpg isn't enough to make me like it. I have a refrigerator box on wheels with 4.10 gears and a transfer case, mpg isn't a concern. Even the wife's Durango has it, it sucks on it too. I have just gotten in the habit of pushing two buttons to start the Jeep instead of one. When I have money that isn't going to mods I may pay to have it turned off permanently.

A single sample / single user for this platform so far, sure. My salesperson told me he saw a 3MPG difference when he tried 3 tanks with it on, 3 tanks with it off. There is also TONS of data that shows that ESS / whatever a company calls it helps to save several MPGs per tank of fuel. It definitely depends on your driving conditions though - I only have ~3-4 stops on my way to work so it won't save as much fuel as someone with 10x more stops than me.

Watch the video from 'Engineering Explained' that explains the gas savings; for a 4-cylinder engine it took ~7 seconds of idling to equal the fuel it took to start the engine once. With a bigger engine it will take even less time idling before you reach the point where you're wasting gas.

What about the other items that are in play aside from fuel? I have to imagine starters have to use more of the materials that are needed to make it reliable which have a greater impact on the environment. Same for batteries? Does the higher quantity of starts and stops put a higher strain on bearings in the motor causing there to be a denser material?

I realize this is nitpicking, but if people are realistically achieving 1 additional MPG average on their tank, would the different materials that result in additional consumption not potentially outweigh the fuel savings?

I could be completely wrong, but just a thought. The mass consumer probably likes the idea because it can potentially have an instant gratification thought in that they may see savings at the pump AND save the baby seals. I wonder what the big picture is, though.
