Is it possible to have a 3rd or 4th key fob? Where and how and how much? Any non dealer options? Is there a way to get guts only if using an AJT fob? Also can you get the hard keys cut from a regular blank somehow?

Thanks for the help.

Great question! in the old days that you actually inserted your key I learned to program extra keys. not sure about these new ones. I will be watching this....

The fobs are expensive. Don't think about using used ones as most today, and the JT I believe, can only be programmed once. But a new fob is a great idea as they are expensive but only more so if you have to get your vehicle towed in to have a new fob programmed because you lost the originals. If I buy anything new, the first thing I will do is buy a new fob and have it programmed, then pull the battery and keep it in a safe place. That or rotate the spare to use up the battery and keep it from leaking and ruining the extra fob.

Also keep in mind that you cannot start the vehicle without a programmed fob, but you can unlock the doors with a "dumb" key. Might be worthwhile to have one around in case you lock your fob up in the Jeep by accident.

Now I am wondering if one of these 2 will work for a hard key.

The first looks like the pic from the JL thread where a guy said he purchased from a locksmith. I wish someone made a small flip style cover for the stock hard key once removed from the remote.

@B345T or @JeepCares can you confirm whether programming is limited ? A used fob can't be programmed for a different vehicle?

I believe you can buy and have keys cut, but they only work on the physical locks. If you want or need another FOB, you have to get it from a dealer, it has to be new and unused, and all the working FOBs have to be present when the new FOB is paired to the vehicle. The cost of a new FOB is around $250. I checked into it, because I temporarily lost my spare FOB. The dealer told me they would have to order one specifically for my truck, and it could take up to two weeks to get it.

Yes. Do NOT get tricked into the 25 dollar used ones on ebay that say they don't know if they can be reprogrammed. They cannot, and they know it!

Unfortunately the above answers are correct they are specific to the model, new ones are expensive and reprogramming can only be done at a dealership..

New will accept programming and if you are lucky a used one can be overwritten... but it is not the norm, it usually fails...

I just went through this, since I only received 1 key upon delivery. The JT keys are laser cut VIN specific. You order/prepay for one through the dealer for about $180, it comes pre-cut but not programmed. Then the dealer programs it for an hour of labor using dealerconnect .So like $250 all in.

I managed to wash one of mine and it didn't survive. Local dealer ordered a replacement for me and it was $224.21 all-in. This was the fob, laser cut key, and programming. It took roughly 1 week to receive and 15 minutes for them to program.

When you order the fob you can either get it with a blank or laser cut. The difference was $10. I preferred to have the extra laser cut key so I have a spare and the $10 difference was negligible.

My dad’s Liberty key fob (the only one it came with) died and he got a new one programmed at the dealer. I think he spent $400 on the thing after programming and the local dealer markup. A few weeks later I borrowed the Liberty, went on an all day snorkeling trip and panicked at the end of the day in the parking lot when the key wasn’t in my backpack where I thought I put it. Turns out it was in my swim trunks! It worked fine thankfully. At home I took it apart and it was totally dry inside! Sometimes you get lucky I guess.
