Good question!! I haven't bought my winch yet but intend to get the Badlands 12K. I intend to not use the metal hook that comes with it and cut the plastic off the loop end.

Yes, I believe that design is patented. I have one and like the clean set up. You just use the woven loop to hook on the edge of the lead. And just use shackles or soft connects instead of hooks when you need to attach to stuff.

If you don't want the hook, consider a safety thimble or a flat link. I wouldn't cut off the loop. I had a safety thimble and now have flat links on both my winches.

Then you can use the fairlead that comes with the winch and the line stays mostly shielded and you can use any style shackle.

I’m not going to cut the loop off. Just remove that plastic piece.

That should not be a plastic piece, every winch I have seen that is metal, that looks like a metal thimble to me in the picture. You might have to cut off the loop and redo the loop, there are videos on how to do it, I even have the Factor 55 tool that makes it easy.
One thing that I think is very important is to keep sunlight off the loop, using the thimble and loop with a flat link protects the loop from sunlight. Using just the loop is safer I assume but sunlight and dirt will be on it but making a new loop once in a while is not a big thing…..Jack

Thanks. I don’t want to mess with cutting the line and re-doing the loop. So, I’ll just use the fairlead that comes with the winch.

It’s quite easy actually, I always carry a ballpoint pen and duct tape in case I break a line somewhere on the trails. Takes less than 3 minutes to make a new loop. If you’re going to run synthetic, you probably should know how to fix it at some point.

I bought a thimble off of Amazon that has rubber pads to prevent scratching the fairlead when the assembly ius in the stowed position. I carry a shackle to use with the thimble. I haven't needed a winch with my wheeling for anything except moving downed trees.'
