I received my letter a couple of days ago. Jeep is instructing me to make an appointment for a no-charge replacement of the clutch assembly along with some updates to the system to detect and warn of high operating temps.

Does any know any details about this such as: Is it the same crappy clutch the truck came with or is it better?

I had already decided to install a clutch this fall (my son is in the Mopar program at the local tech college. The labor will be free. An instructor would be overseeing). Is it w waste of $$ to buy an aftermarket clutch when I can get the new ORM free? I do very little off roading and nothing that would stress the factory stuff. 🤔

The clutch itself seems to be perfectly fine from user reports. It is not the same clutch (Stellantis already admitted the first clutch was a failed design, not a failed part) it's a new design.

HOWEVER, there are many user reports of the new "updates to the system to detect and warn of high operating temps." For example: slippage now puts the truck in limp mode until you can get it to a dealer and Jeep will tell you there's nothing to fix because it's "operating normally". Fun fact, this truck does not have a temp sensor in the manual transmission, so it's only way to "detect" high temps is to guess based on RPM vs wheel speed. So get the recall and if your truck has reason to think it might have overheated, it will limp until you get it to a dealer regardless of the actual temp, AKA you can't let it "cool down" for a few days and continue to drive as normal.

Unless i wanted to sell my gladiator and needed the recall off the VIN or were already experiencing problems related to my factory clutch, i would not have the recall performed now personally.

Jeep is still struggling with the bleeding edge technology that is the manual transmission. They're really hard to figure out it seems.

They've had manual transmissions in Wranglers for long time why is this one a problem?

they tried to skimp and save every penny by using a unit with a torque max a ball's hair above the 3.6's torque rating, also tried to get cutesy with a dual-mass design to ease the work on the starter for the ASS system.

pressure plate seems to be the failure point. loses grip, causing constant slippage which causes heat which causes boom.

doesn't matter how long manuals have been in wranglers or CJs or any other vehicle (they've been around since the 19th century), if you spec a shitty design for your use case, you're going to have a bad time. My biggest concern is knowing how corporate works: they'll blame all these extra costs on the idea of offering a manual transmission to begin with, not the engineers who made bad decisions or the bean counters who forced those decisions on the engineers.

MTs these days just arent reliable. I prefer a stick shift and still have two cars with 6MTs but I havent bought a new one in ten years. With the exception of Porsche, it seems that all OEMs have given up on MTs

The last letter I received in early 2023 (recall 23V-116) stated a remedy was not yet available, but when I logged on to my Jeep dashboard this morning, it appears they have updated this recall and finally decided to replace the clutch assembly (haven't received my official letter yet). Although I'm not a fan of the software-only "solution" of limiting torque when slippage is detected, I'll go ahead and have this recall completed since it looks like they'll be replacing the clutch assembly. 43,000 miles and I get a new clutch...works for me.

There are many threads on this…..

My personal experience is this though. My 23 Mojave was bought post recall. Supposedly it had a new clutch and software reprogram. The bolts on my transmission and crossmember showed 0 signs of being removed.

My clutch felt like crap compared to any manual id driven before and it’s a design flaw. That said a 4,000miles while driving on beach i had an overheat light and then service transmission light come on. I wasn’t slipping the clutch. Had to limp 70miles to dealer for reset.

Since then I put a ACT clutch in and purchased JScan setup to reset transmission light. I love the act clutch and recommend it to anyone tired a
Of the crappy factory setup.

I’d steer clear of recall all together if I was you and get the clutch replaced when you planned to down the road. Just my opinion of course.

My Bronco’s a gem. I feel a clutch upgrade and aftermarket support make up for where OEM dropped the ball

Last month I received the fix for my gladiator clutch. After 26,000 miles and avoiding having my grandkids ride in the jeep it’s fixed. Actually it drives better than I first bought the jeep. No more difficult starting out in first, no more slipping in 3rd and 4th accelerating on freeway ramps, no more popping out of cruise control, no more losing screen displays…. But most importantly feeling safe to put grandkids in car seats in the back seat.

Now…. What about this battery failure? I’m starting to get vibration in the steering at highway speeds?

Thanks everyone! I’m satisfied, personally, that it is a different clutch design. It sounds like the random engagement issue will be fixed. I do very little off roading these days. And I’d rather drop into low-range that slip the hell out of the clutch anyway. With almost 70K on the odometer, I’m happy to go with the freebee.

Sure makes me miss the old T90 and Spicer 18. I e paired those with Chevy small blocks over the years with no issues.

My local dealer told me it's a two-step process requiring me to drop off the car one time to inspect the clutch and then a second time to actually replace the clutch was your experience as well? Feels like a dealer problem.

No. I dropped it off, got a loner, and picked up four hours later.

But the had just servised the jeep a few weeks earlier and a week before replaced the radio. Couldn’t keep CarPlay working.
