Legitimate gripe. It's freaking ridiculous.

For what it's worth, I have a 2005 TJ my son drives. Pervasive problem on those models too. There is a fix on one of the jeep or wrangler forums where you replace the fill tube, I did this to ours it works. Access it through the wheel well. The replacement part oddly enough is a GM part. If you can't find it let me know sure the info is still out there I did this in 2012. SMH my new JT does the same.
I would take a link to the fix if you found it.

Has anyone asked their dealer about this yet?

This is not the same thread I used 7 years ago on my TJ, but it is the exact same fix and looks like a good detailed explanation. Root cause is defined as binding of the Inlet Check Valve. There is a backflow prevention valve in the replacement GM part that fixes the issue even if it is a "hack" fix. Certainly not looking for a solution like this for my new $50k truck. It will be going to the dealer when I get time.

Pictures of the nozzle are a must! Looks like this one has the compression collar for an air tight seal. I can’t remember the last time I saw one of those around Maine and New Hampshire. Mostly see the nozzle with the rubber shield that sits just above the filler neck.

Here is my last spill, I'll take it from a better angle next time but in CO we have old school little rubber collars, not the big spring-loaded vapor catchers like CA. Which also means I put the pump handle on lock and I am doing other things until it is done. This day was windy so I sat in the Jeep to stay warm during the empty tank fill. I'm going to start refilling at 3/4 tank just to get more data points.

My LJ does it, I never did the "hack" fix my fix is if at 1/2 tank or less is to fill 7or so gal stop let tank burp then continue with fill. Start listening for burp "dong" sound stop then slow fill until clicks off. Stations seem to have gas pumps turned way up to fill faster, to much pressure builds up. I see it in my work car too. I think it's due to EPA devices on vehicles. I noticed on the inside of fuel fill door sticker has directions to let set for few seconds (10) before removing pump nozzle.

Well the last two times I have filled up it has been close to 50 degrees and there was no overflow.
Seems to be temperature related.

I have not read this entire thread but it did strike my attention. Had this issue with my '07 JKUR and the entire fuel tank was replaced under recall (or TSB, whatever). My 2010 Powerwagon also had this issue and would even stall because the engine would choke out, but no recall or TSBs for it. I would just do a little mental math and cut it short .5-1 gallon while filling.

My Gladiator has burped once on me. It happened when I had the handle locked to half way open. Since then I made sure to squeeze the trigger fully open and it has not repeated. I am guessing the vapors trip the handle quicker with it wide open. It definitely seems to be a FCA trend. Keeping my eye on this thread.

Also, I am located in MN and got the truck in December so its only been fueled in cold climate.

Same thing happening here in Kansas City with mine on a 90 degree day.

Anyone hear of a fix yet?

Yes, very simple, you are pumping the gas too fast, insert the gas nozzle down to where it seats and stays in place, then lift the pump lever to the first notch, and let the pump slowly Add the gas. Did this with both the Renegade and my Gladiator. Problem solved, no overspills, you need to slow down and take life easy...
cheers

Seems odd that in 2020 the onus is on the driver to find a workaround for spilling volatile fuel during a routine fill up when the handle is squeezed all the way in, which I'd guess is what most people do by instinct (this is NOT intended to be a snippy response at you @TrailHiker )

I haven't run into this problem yet at 6K miles, and I mash the handle down all the way every time. The nozzle doesn't seat all the way in, but so far no issues. Good to know there's a workaround for when it happens, thank you.

It will be interesting to see what happens with ecodiesel JTs on those high flow rate diesel pumps.

this is:

1) a dumb excuse for gas blowback. Gas is meant to be pumped at full throttle If a car is built normally, which is why the 15 other cars before my jt i owned didn’t have this issue, only this one.
2) we don’t have “notches” on gas levers in NY, so I guess the thousands of gladiators sold here are supposed to have owners with psychic mentality considering this isn’t in the instruction booklet to “pump slower”.

sorry but there’s no reason I have to wait15 minutes to fill my tank when every other car can do it in 6 or 7

Deoends on the gas pumps, they do not all operate at the same speed.
i am not saying this is normal behavio, just what I have observed on two California. Jeep vehicles. I had a Dakota, which would get some gas nozzles stuck in the gas fill tube, had to take, the gas door off to release the nozzle, the issue was with a certain model gas pump, which have since been replaced at most stations here.

Whatever the cause, if pumping gas at the fast setting gets a spill, then pump,at a slower setting. If you feel,it is a vehicle issue, contact your Jeep dealer to get it fixed.
