@JAY, IT ISN'T BEDTIME YET!

You stated in the most recent, news flash, https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/plywood-question-put-to-bed-yes-they-fit-flat-in-the-gladiator/ that "P.S. in case you didn’t know — setting the Gladiator’s three-position tailgate on the middle setting matches the top of the tailgate up with the tops of the rear wheel housing and enables the Gladiator to carry 20 sheets of 4×8 plywood or drywall flat; this is according to Jeep."

Well the JT manual says we can only put 300lbs weight on the tailgate at half position. So we still have a possible bed problem!

Even 1/4" plywood weighs about 22 lbs per sheet, at 19 sheets that's, 418lbs......hey @JeepCares , which is it, 418lbs or 300lbs? Is Engineering right, or is Marketing right? Or did Marketing not take the engineer's numbers correctly?

i'll post the manual in a sec. https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/gladiator-owners-manual-download-in-pdf.15679/

Hi steffen707,
We have checked with our internal resources and after conducting additional testing, Jeep engineering has confirmed that up to 500 lbs payload can be carried in the bed with the tailgate in the mid position. This payload rating is dependent on the sheet cargo being properly supported with 2x4s positioned in the bed as specified by the owner's manual. Future printings of the owner's manual will show the new 500 lbs payload. I hope this offers some clarification!

Sweet, already a new revision on the Gladiator Manual. Making the ones out now sorta desirable.

@JeepCares what's the payload of the tailgate in the down position? Thanks!
Good Morning,

Sorry for the delay in response, per the Jeep team:

  1. Up to 500 lbs payload can be carried in the bed with the tailgate in the mid position. This payload rating is dependent on the sheet cargo being properly supported with 2x4s positioned in the bed as specified by the owner's manual.
  2. Ramp load at end of down tailgate
    • Single ramp = 600lbs
    • Dual Ramp = 425lbs/ramp or 850lbs total
  3. Distributed load across down tailgate: 1850lbs
Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

In the plywood scenario, the tailgate is not supporting the entire weight of the load anyway.

Wow, those numbers far exceeded my expectations. 1,850 lbs. max load distributed across the tailgate? That's more than you can legally load onto any Gladiator including the Max Tow model. Wow.

I will no longer worry about myself and someone else sitting on the tailgate. :)

Then, I guess its safe to load my Harley into the back, with a ramp positioned on the edge of the tailgate.
