Sorry that was a typo in the text.

GMRS is what I was referring to. Same as Title Stated.

GMRS stands for general mobile radio service. Jeep Jamboree dropped the CB radio requirement and is making GMRS mandatory for their 2021 events. Midland says advantages are increased power, compatibility to FRS radios, repeater capable and low cost.

GMRS operates in the UHF range specifically at 462 and 467MHz. Consequently the antenna is MUCH smaller than a CB antenna (6" vs 102") which makes it easier to mount and mount in places a CB antenna couldn't. The antennas also typically need little if any tuning. GMRS is also FM which makes it less susceptible to RFI unlike CB which is AM.

So far my communication has been with family on the farm. Do people actually use their call signs on the trail?

Someone school me why this license is needed. Don’t ever remember needing a license to operate a CB. I’ve read Midlands site. It appears license is just necessary to know who and how many are using frequencies?

Wanting to do what’s right. Have same Midland and almost just opened it up and turned it on.

Thanks in advance.

Back in the early '70s a license was required for CB - I've still got mine somewhere. My call sign was KFG 2616...

GMRS license is required for anything over 2 watts. If your installing a mobile radio the FCC requires a license. No different than any other land mobile radio service. Public Safety, Ham Radio and many services require a license. GMRS is one of those.

If you using a bubble pack radio (AKA FRS/GMRS) then no license is required but those must meet the FCC requirement of 2 watts.

License Got, and scouting the MXT275 and a bunch of accessories here (for once that tax return makes it :fingerscrossed: ) - https://www.cooltechllc.com/21-2018-jeep-wrangler-jl

I'll still be a Baofeng pirate from time to time tho. But getting our local crew's coms locked in as well will be much better Glad to see GMRS winning out, its pretty easy and affordable.

Received my license and Call Sign this morning.
Already ordered my MXT275 and accessories from Midland.

I used discount code "EAL" for 20% off.
So 149.99 comes out to 119.99 plus tax and free shipping.

I just spent my $70 and received my license but recommend people hold off if they can. I wish I would have know when I applied but the price is going down soon. Back in December, they revised things and said they will be chopping the license fee in half. It will be $35 for a 10-year license but not sure when.
