LOL a the base plate on a new jack supposed to be this loose? Someone told me the pin should be a bolt but this is how it showed up new in the box.

That's normal. I've not seen a bolt, mine have pins.

It'll rattle like the dickens on a dirt road... I have one mounted on the roof rack of my FJ. I pumped the socket in the foot full of black silicone and bedded the i-beam, so it wouldn't rattle but still had flex to seat flat to the terrain.

I mounted it forward to better clear the bed light BUT I at one point I had the base resting on the vertical part of the bed thinking less rattle but looked close to the light. I may try sliding it down a bit again and see but that made it tight with no movement in the mounted position. As long as the light is cleared might be fine.

Many people just store the base separate (part of the reason for the cotter pin). This might solve your rattle and let your light shine.

Isn't that jack missing something? Every one I've seen has been a dowel with a pin or the clip that wraps around and hooks over the pin... both have smooth ends and that dowel looks broken off.

Also to muffle the rattle, several companies make boots. I've always though they were more convenient than removing the base and finding a place to store it.

I guess I'm wrong because Quadratec has a pic that looks just like yours. Must be just a straight cotter pin.

Previously I've only seen two types... the traditional dowel with a hole and cotter pin to retain it and this one:

Depends on the jack model. My "Extreme" version does have the pin/clip.

That probably explains the difference then. I've just never seen one in the wild that just had a cotter pin.
