It's an expensive hobby, but it's my hobby.
Why can't I like cheap hobbies? Like reading or crochet or knitting? Or playing soccer? Or enjoying gardening?

If I can't shoot it, smoke it, or build it, I don't like it.

Hell, I just put together a sweet Tier1 setup together and it's $150. The holster and optic will be more than the piece it goes with!

My wife is a quilter ->
Newest sewing machine - MSRP = $11,000
APQS quilting machine - $18,000
Intelliquilter - $12,000
Irons these days, GOOD ones, can be over $100
Embroidery machine (bought 7 or 8 years ago) - $8,000
Blades for rotary cutters - be prepared - last I saw a pack of 5 was 25 bucks or so
Fabric - $12+ / yard. Luckily she got most of hers over the years for about $8 and when she had the quilt shop, wholesale prices. Take that times hundreds of yards of fabric.
We came back from Overland Park this last winter with about $1,100 worth of quilt batting (filled the truck) because the price was about to skyrocket.
I made her a rack for her rulers, I bet there's a good $150-$200 in rulers in that rack Maybe more.
Thread - many dozens of spools from $15 to $50 each
The shelving units I made for her fabric, haven't gotten the raised panel doors all made yet - think sheets of 3/4" oak plywood, then solid oak stock for the doors, face frames, etc.
I don't even want to think of the rest of the odds and ends she has in tools and supplies.

So when I need a car part - I don't hear much about it other than watching when we can best pay for it.

I don't say much about her hobby either as she's happy as heck, she's damned good at it, and she's made stuff and sold it giving the proceeds to the local food back, we figure a few thou over the years and so far this year, she's done about 3 dozen quilts to be donated to people hit by natural disasters, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and so on.

1 year 10 days and some change. Walked out of work the other night. It was sitting under the light pole just washed. Thought to myself. Damn that's a good looking truck. Love it still.

Got my snaz-rubi in August 2021. I love it. I still stare at in in the parking lot. I look under the hood just to look under the hood. I told on the ground under just to look under it. I look for reasons to take the top off and I hate the reason I need to put it back on. It still has its new car smell too! I don’t let my kids eat in it or do everything I can to minimize it. It’s beautiful when it’s clean and sexy when it’s dirty. I love it so much the ESS doesn’t even bother me the way it does others and I always look back when I walk away.

You could sell it to shift or carmax for more than you paid for it now. Lol
I will try carmax, vroom and carvana are low offers. I’m trying to find something I like. Kinda hard in this market. Yes resell is good but then you just have to pay a lot for something else

Heheh. I'm familiar with that world.

My mom is a quilter as well. She has at least 5 different machines. She gave my wife one of her "old" ones. She has Pfaffs (the hand-me-down wasn't). And then all the material. My dad is handy, so he's built her quilting tables, fabric racks, etc. My parents have two homes they split time at. And since they're in their twilight, my mom isn't going to be hauling stuff back and forth. Each home has a quilting setup and dedicated space. My inheritance, mom! (just kidding, I've always told my mom it's their money, they made it.)

My dad just plays in his woodshop at the second house. Compared to my mom's setup, his is bare bones. Table saw (craftsman) from 1977. Dewalt chopsaw from ~2000. Small planer. And all the other small tools one would need. I think up until recently his hand power tools were from the 60s or 70s. Even as a kid I was afraid of using them for fear of being electrocuted.
