I just installed an OEM spare tire carrier on a Ram Promaster 3500. The cable doesn’t fill me with confidence.

How often should I lower and raise my spare on my Gladiator to ensure the cable continues to function?

I had a spare tire that I removed from underneath a 1995 pickup truck. Removed after 193,000 miles and 28 years, cable was still fine.

I’d just keep it clean and not worry about it.

maybe shoot some WD-40 on there occasionally.

Sounds like a question for a YouTube video...

I try to bring it down a few (2-3) times a year and I hit it with penetrating oil, check pressure with seasonal temps, etc. its tricky enough, I wouldn't want the first time I was figuring it out to be on the roadside in the dark

I would say it depends on the types of roads you frequently drive. If you live in the city nd stay on pavement, you will probably not have issues. If you drive ravel in the rural areas lot kep a pair of cable cutters with you.

In my opinion it mostly depends on where you live/drive the most..

If you live in UT or AZ you can probably ignore it until you need it lol.

If you live in the rust belt like I do I probably check and lube it up at least a couple of times over the course of the winter.

I'm not worried about it breaking, just seizing up.

It's probably a good idea to do it at least once a year. Coat it with some lube or corrosion inhibitor. That being said, I live in the desert and have not dropped mine or sprayed it in almost four years. I will be swapping wheels and tires soon with some take-offs, which will give me four matching spares. I'll carry around at least one of those along with my AAA card.

Every time you do a 5 tire rotation...
Exactly. For me that ranges from 5,000 miles to maybe 6 or 7,000 or whenever I feel they need it.

Around here with the salt and brine, you can expect it to rust up or at least get jammed up pretty easily.

I know I'll be cleaning and lubing the power steps just put on pretty regular. A neighbor says he's seen the steps on other trucks seize up in our winters. He was concerned about my putting them on our Jeeps.

Yeah, this is one trip to town and back - salt.........

LOL - not around here it wouldn't be. Had trouble with my 95 F250 after a short time - 10 years the frame was flaking rust, forget the spare (it was a bolt, not a cable)
I took the spare out from under the truck and only threw it in the back for longer trips.
Under-truck spares are absolutely a problem here.
We pride ourselves with the ability to destroy metals here in a season or two.

I drop my spare once a year in the summer . Clean everything up, lube and check air pressure.
