Seen the universal type but want one that mounts using the rear seat grab handle holes.

Have one coming for the back seat like pictured but my hog killer is too long to mount vertical.

Thanks

What did you use to build this?
It took a few days but here goes... There is one deviation that I did from the instructions and that was the size of the bolts used to tie the bar to the rollbar. I should have went with 1/4-20 so that's what the directions here will say.

Materials needed:
  • 1" Square tubing (preferably aluminum) (HD or Tractor Supply?)
Jeep Gladiator ISO overhead gun rack PXL_20220712_210020273.MP
  • 1/4-20 Riv-Nut (x2) (Amazon)
  • 1/4-20 x3" Hex bolt (x2) (Tractor Supply)
  • 1/4" rubber washers (x2) (Tractor Supply)
  • 1/4" metal washer (x2) (Tractor Supply)
  • 1/4-20 star knob (x2) (Tractor Supply)
  • Jeep Gladiator ISO overhead gun rack PXL_20220712_204742561.MP
  • 1/4-20 x2.5" bolt with nut (x8) (Tractor Supply)
Jeep Gladiator ISO overhead gun rack PXL_20220712_204840463.MP
  • 1" square end cap (x2) (Tractor Supply?)
  • Koplin Rhino grip-single-21500 (x2) (Amazon)
Jeep Gladiator ISO overhead gun rack PXL_20220712_204834014.MP
Assembly:
  1. The tubing will need to be cut to 52.25" long
  2. Drill holes exactly 1" (on center) from each end of the tube for the rivnuts. Obviously, only drill through one side of the tube.
  3. Install rivnuts
  4. Paint to desired color and let cure
  5. Install end caps into tubing
  6. Install the Rhino grips (with the 2.5" bolts) so that they hang in the same orientation as the rivnuts. You may need to drill the holes in the grips as they are a snug fit. Leave grips loose for later adjustment.
Jeep Gladiator ISO overhead gun rack PXL_20210709_174159772.MP
  7. To prevent scratching or marring of the paint, you might want to put some electrical tape beside the rivnuts to prevent scratching of the rollbar.
  8. Install the bar assembly above the rollbar. Start by sliding from the rear of the cab, forward and above the rollbar. The rivnuts should fall/slip into the enlarged holes on the top of the rollbar. This is a tight clearance from the roof so you might get a little rub. The pic below is shown without the star knobs.
Jeep Gladiator ISO overhead gun rack PXL_20210709_174152513.MP
  9. Assemble the 3" bolts with the star knobs, washer, and rubber washer so that it makes contact with the rollbar.
  10. Insert the bolt assembly into the rollbar and thread into the rivnuts above. Do not over tighten. If done correctly, you shouldn't be able to move the bar and the assembly should handle the roughest of roads.
I'm not saying you could swing off of this thing, but it is very sturdy and a complete no-drill type install which beats the pants off of anything on the market today.

Just now seeing this. Thanks for sharing. Question; did you use a rivnut tool to seat the rivnuts?

Kolpin makes a number of different clamps for long guns. They are primarily intended for use on ATVs. I use a model that spins and tilts on my sporting clays buggy (basically a baby stroller with gun mounts). I built that about ten years ago and it’s still going strong.

How’s the after install headroom for the rear seat passengers? Nicely done by the way.

Yes, that rivnut tool has been a blessing for a lot of my projects

Short answer, there is none. You can ride back there with the rack installed, no guns, and be ok-ish. The arms of the rack are in your range of motion for your head so I wouldn't trust it for more than a quick ride down the road. For dogs in the back seat, it's a non-issue.

I do IT stuff so I can buy Jeep stuff.
I'm in the process of following these instructions to build one of these racks for myself. I didn't have a rivnut gun, but figure this one will work for my forseeable needs ... not cheap but not too expensive and includes an assortment of rivnuts to get me started..... Rivnut Tool on Amazon
... and just arrived today so maybe I'll get to play with it this weekend!
